+With the widespread use of PCs and Web browsers such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer® and Netscape Navigator™, it is natural to extend GUIs with speech input and output so users can "speak and listen" to the Web, in addition to "click and read." Speech makes the Web user interface more natural. Combining speech with GUIs presents new challenges in user interface design, implementation, and testing.

+This tutorial explains both languages for developing speech-enabled Web applications (sometimes called multimodal applications because the user can type, click, and speak to enter information), as well as guidelines for developing quality user interfaces. Everything discussed in the tutorial can be used today to voice-enable a Web site. Attendees should be able to implement simple voice-enabled Web pages for Internet Explorer after attending this tutorial.
