[4.14] Adobe Embedded Font Libs and Utils required for FlatSpark skins

Hi,

Moving here from the 'release' thread.

The argument is that since FlatSpark requires the Adobe Embedded Font
stuff and the SDK "requires" FlatSpark, we should change the Embedded
Font stuff from (Optional) to (Required).

Pros and cons?

be careful using LegacyMobileThemeOverride with iOS - it removes the
padding for the os8+ status bar

As an update to my complaint about the roboto warnings when debugging to an
Android 4 device, I fixed it by copying the font-face from the default.css
and changing the embed-as-cff option to true:

/*Roboto Fonts*/
@font-face {
	src: url("spark/skins/android4/assets/fonts/Roboto-Regular.ttf");
	fontFamily: RobotoRegular;
	embed-as-cff: true;
}

@font-face {
	src: url("spark/skins/android4/assets/fonts/Roboto-Bold.ttf");
	fontFamily: RobotoBold;
	fontWeight: bold;
	embed-as-cff: true;
}

No more warnings driving me crazy by filling up the Console.

I suppose that I am one of the users who did not read the instructions(can't
find them at the moment). How can I get rid of the warnings: "warning:
incompatible embedded font 'RobotoRegular' specified for
spark.components::Label (Label73) . This component requires that the
embedded font be declared with embedAsCFF=true."

I am using the latest release of 4.14 as of last night with all the options
checked using the installer. I had been getting that warning while using the
release candidate, but thought it would go away with the final release. I do
not declare fonts in my app.

If I include the compiler option
-includes=mx.utils.LegacyMobileThemeOverride, I can use the old theme and
have no warnings, so I am guessing that it has something to do with the new
skin.

I like it, but I wonder if we can provide a better way to tell the user who
don't read the installation instructions or the wiki, that the errors he
gets when using FlatSpark might be because of this.

So, we remove the OFL checkbox and add some text to the font jars
license message:

"\n\nNote: the use of the FlatSpark skin and components requires
embedded font support."

Thoughts?

After thinking about it a bit more, it would be hard to argue that the
font jars are a 'build tool’. It is probably true that from the
perspective of building a SWF, the font jars are only used by the compiler
and thus are part of its build tool, but we own the compiler and ship its
source and the jars are used by a compiler feature.

The AIR SDK is considered a build tool because we leverage the compiler
and debugger in it. PlayerGlobal.swc (and airglobal.swc) are considered a
build tool because they describe the target runtime and no code from the
SWCs get linked into the final SWF. The analogy is a ‘C’ compiler and
system libraries.

The Flex MXMLC compiler depends on Java compiler and its libraries. Java
is considered a build tool. IMO, the font jars don’t describe the target
runtime. They are used to do file format conversions. If they were truly
self-contained then maybe you could argue that they are a tool.

So, I think the best we can do is warn folks in the installer that if they
plan to use FlatSpark they should check the box for the font jars. Or
make FlatSpark not require embedding.

We might end up removing the OFL license checkbox from the installer as
well so keep that in mind as you share your opinions.

Playerglobal is a ‘Build Tool’ and falls under different rules. Let me
look into whether the font libraries are part of the ‘Build Tool’ category
or not. I just realized it might be.

I think installing FlatSpark but throwing errors that the users will not
understand is not a good idea.

If the license is optional, then FlatSpark's installation should depend on
that license.

So, we need to make 'playerglobal.swc' Optional?

No sorry it a legal requirement [1]

Justin

1. http://www.apache.org/legal/resolved.html#optional

Re: [4.14] Adobe Embedded Font Libs and Utils required for FlatSpark skins

I think the Required/Optional refers more to the fact that you are
either unable to build the SDK without that component - Required - or
that you can build it without - Optional, you lose functionality
though.

So, calling the Embedded Font stuff required doesn't so much reflect
on the license (as that is the same as it is for the very much
required playerglobal.swc), but on the fact that you need to install
it in order to have a functional SDK.

Or it may be just a communication issue: you miss functionality when
you opt out of the Embedded Font stuff, we may just need to make it
clear that not being able to use the FlatSpark skins/components is
part of what you lose.

Actually, as you agree to the already required 'Adobe Flash Player
playerglobal.swc' license, IMHO you also agreed to the license for the
embedded font stuff... As they are the same license.

My understanding is that (legally) as i't's not under an Apache compatible license it needs to be an optional component.
