[Discuss] Move log4cxx to "attic"

I just looked at the website of log4cxx in order to move it to the new
CMS and realized, this project is pretty dead. Last commit was before
23 months but this was an exception and just a small bugfix. Most
recent commits are from Curt.
http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/logging/log4cxx/trunk/src/main/cpp/

I cannot see how we could revive this component and therefore my
thoughts were to put it to some kind of attic. I don't mean the Apache
Attic project, I meant some kind of Logging Attic. Similar to the
"Dormant Components" of commons.apache.org.

With moving to dormant, I would say we replace the current website
with a one pager saying this project is not longer maintained. People
who need the docs are encouraged to check out the source. I would not
any longer put effort in maintaining for example the branding
requirements for this project.

Thoughts?

Exceptions prove the rule. *laughing*

Without having had a closer look at the issues there are >100 open
issues and about 80 >= major listed at JIRA which is about one third
of all issues listed for log4cxx. The next release (0.10.1) has issues
listed that were not updated since 2008.

*cough* It's dead. *cough*

There is something like this (forgot the URL), but we actually cannot
know exactly because I don't think it does include the mirror
downloads.

Like log4j 1.2? ;-)
There are always bugfixes to be done and from the dev list I know
people have already forked the project.

Can we somehow determine a kind of usage statistic? Likewise: are there
download statistics available for the past few months?

I'm saying this because even if it is no longer actively developed it could
still be in use. Generally speaking, the logging family is quite a "stable"
piece of library that doesn't change that much once it reached a working
codebase.

Cheers,

Good point. I was not aware the Attic would eat subcomponents of
projects too rather than "complete projects". I am also fine with the
attic. And it does make sense instead inventing another graveyard.

Why would you want to hold it in a dormant state rather than move it
directly to the Attic? If people show up who want to contribute,
reviving it from the Attic shouldn't be more difficult than changing its
state from dormant to active.

I'd not be against marking it as dormant if you feel Attic was going too
far.

Well, one needs to create a maven-vm file, change the images and check
if the terming is ok. Then build and deploy (best to the new cms
already)
A couple of few hours?

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/logging-log4cxx-dev/
Less activity, some people say they have forked this project on github

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/logging-log4cxx-user/
Less activity

Oh, I don't know. How much work does it need to be compliant with the branding requirements? I guess my reaction would be to mark it as dormant on the main page and at the top of the log4cxx web site but leave all the current content there.

Does the mailing list or issue list get any activity?
