Oracle Bad news JDK 6 will no longer be free which screws AOO usage
Why has this issue not been mentioned?
last publicly available release of Oracle JDK 6 is to be released in
*February, 2013*.
This means that after February 19, 2013, all newsecurity updates <#>,
patches and fixes for Java SE 6 and Java SE 5 will only be available
through My Oracle Support and will thus require a commercial license
with Oracle

I agree with you but phpAdmin allows me to fill in a form made from the
tabledata,. I can add, modify and delete individual records from a phpMyAdmin
GUI interface, no command line. Also allow dumping and save the table
information as any nuber of ways. I use CVS, ODS and MySQL as saved backups of
the stored table. I have 10 databases so large, some small.
It comes down to what individual perfers and is used to. I only use command
line if all else fails.

Russ,
Thanks for the info. I will have to look into those.
IMHO, you can't have too many backup options.
The advantage of Base is that I can create database (table) maintenance
gui forms that allow me to add & modify record data without the pain of
creating queries all the time. Base allows one to create & modify
tables, queries, and data entry/maintenance forms in a gui environment,
which I find more productive than a command line based client. There is
also a report generator, but in my experience the Base report generator,
actually the Oracle Report Builder plugin, is busted and I am working
with a 3rd-party report builder called DataVision. Most of my database
tables are inventories. I currently have 50 tables in one database.
Agreed, many of these tables are small tables of listbox-type data for
remote key access. That said, I found that Base does not do all of the
things a command line client does. There have been postings about Base
not making expected changes to a table, especially a key. It seems when
Base saves a table definition the first time, subsequent key definition
changes are not executed. In my experience with that type problem, I
found I had to create a MySQL query in the mysql command line tool to
perform the changes I wanted. But that process is extremely rare. In
fact, I have only needed to do it once in the 8 years or so I have been
using Base.

These client libs are available from the openSUSE repo's. Maybe slackware has
something equal.
[Code]
rpm -qa |grep libmysqlclient
libmysqlclient_r18-5.5.25a-102.1.x86_64
libmysqlclient18-32bit-5.5.25a-102.1.x86_64
libmysqlclient-devel-5.5.25a-102.1.x86_64
libmysqlclient18-5.5.25a-102.1.x86_64
[/Code}
Since I am the inly user of my database and its all on localhost, I use
phpMyAdmin alot to reun querries and do most functions associated with
database maintenance.
My KDE apps using the dB are KMyMoney, Amarok and Digikam. I also have
several databases with Lions Club oriented data.

Russ,
That is encouraging. As soon as I get some time, I will have to try Java7.
I am using Slackware 12.2 (k2.6.27) Linux with LibreOffice 3.5.7.2.
I use Base as a MySQL client. I do not use the LO internal database
server (called something like HSQLDB?). I assume that is what you mean
by "not use Base." I am not aware of any MySQL-provided clients, just
the MySQL server from, now, Oracle. Oracle MySQL does provide some
command line tools to access the database, but they are not as
user-friendly as Base.
Thanks.

I am running openSUSE 12.2 with LibreOffice 3.6.4 from LO website and
LibreOffice 3.6.3 from openSUSE repo's with Java_7_0-openjdk from SuSE repo's
with no issues.
I do not use Base, I use MySQL, so I'm not sure about it. All other office
items work.
I am not sure about the Windows OS's since I do not use them.

RE: Oracle Bad news JDK 6 will no longer be free which screws AOO usage
Posted by "Dennis E. Hamilton" <de...@acm.org>.
The Oracle blog post that is being quoted was only posted on 2012-12-03.
Apparently, the oversight is with regard to the Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap, here: <http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/eol-135779.html>.
What is telling, for me, is that the End of Public Updates Notification apparently happened in February 2011. (And the end of Java SE 7 Public updates will be in July 2014, barely more than a year after the Java SE 6 cut-off, with no clue when the successor of Java SE 7 will come into use.)
I'm not sure what these terms mean. I still receive automatic updates from Oracle for the Java 6 SE installations on various of my computers.
In any case, it is valuable that this has been raised as an issue. I have no idea how it will be addressed, but it is good to have the project's attention drawn to it.

Subject: Re: Oracle Bad news JDK 6 will no longer be free which screws AOO usage
Thanks Girvin,
I run Windows 7x64 Home Premium.
AOO is the ONLY piece of my software that requires JRE 6. Thunderbird
(TB) seems to run OK without it, although its been squirrely for the
last few months (cause unknown). I've already installed two substitutes
for the absolute failure of TB, both paid for programs. I am prepared,
as best I can be.
I agree with your last paragraph 100%.
AOO will be unusable if they don't upgrade, one way or the other. Libra
Office will be in the same boat, so can't go there either. Next bet is
Google, but I really don't like their interface.
I used the AOO Database portion, but didn't depend on its usefulness, so
/that/ isn't a major loss, for me. I don't trust the Apache Foundation
to actually /Fix /this JRE issue before February since there has been no
authoritative effort to notify the group of the issue.
The notification came straight from an Oracle email.
Take Care.

Re: Oracle Bad news JDK 6 will no longer be free which screws AOO
usage
Posted by "Girvin R. Herr" <gi...@sbcglobal.net>.
Scooter,
Keep in mind that unless you are using Base or the Accessibility
features, you don't need Java to run OpenOffice (AOO) or LibreOffice (LO).
I am not sure what TB needs Java for. I know some websites use it,
since there are TB configuration options to disable certain Java
features for website access. Also, running Mozilla's update checker (I
can't seem to find it now) will flag Java as needing update if it is out
of date.
I am running Slackware Linux and LO 3.5.7.2 and I have not had any
problems with TB or Firefox. However, I am not on the bleeding edge. I
am still running TB 2.0.0.24 and Firefox 3.0.19. They work, so why update.
I use Base heavily, but only as a client to MySQL. I rely on it for my
critical database maintenance The MySQL connector also uses Java. The
only show-stopper problems I have with LO Base center on the Oracle
Report Builder (ORB). I have inventory database tables with 5000
records and still growing. Creating a report on this table brings ORB
to its knees. Note that it also brought OpenOffice 3.3 ORB to its
knees! So it isn't a problem unique to LO and it is ongoing. I have
found another report builder, DataVision, which works much better, but
it too has some problems. The worst is that many features are not
implemented yet, but development seems to have stopped. The latest
version is dated June 2008. Even so, it is still more useful to me than
ORB. Guess what!? DataVision is written in Java! I am familiar with
C/C++ programming, but not Java. So I acquired a Java book and hope to
learn enough to fix some of the DataVision problems. In the meantime, I
found work-arounds to keep me going.
It is my understanding that the number of Base developers on the AOO and
LO teams is limited. That is why Base fixes are slow in coming. I also
understand that the entities involved are trying to resolve that. I am
hopeful that Base development will pick up and some of these bugs will
be fixed. I hear that there is also an effort in the LO community to
toss out Java for all LO coding. That may improve things too.
As of this time, I have not seen this Oracle/Java6 issue posted on the
LO user forum. You might want to "cross-post" it there also. I am sure
there are people on that forum that would be interested to know of
Oracle's decision. If you want me to post it for you, I am willing to
do that.
Take care.

You are right: OpenOffice is a 32 bits application on Windows (and
MacOS), this means it needs a 32 bits JRE 7.

Hi, Ariel,
Do I recall correctly that there is an important consideration,
particularly on new machines? AOO (32-bit only) needs the 32-bit Java,
and won't run with the 64-bit Java.

OpenOffice does not require JRE 6, it works fine with JRE 7 on Windows.
In case it does not work for you, it's due to a bug with Java 7 that
requires you to install extra software, as documented in the Release
Notes:
http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html#AOO3.4.1ReleaseNotes-KnownIssues
Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0 and 3.4.1 support Java 7, which is the
recommended configuration; but (especially on 64-bit Windows) you might
receive warnings about the Java version being defective. In that case,
download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable
Package.

Take Care.

It was my understanding that the only thing in OO that was dependent
upon Java was the database engine (HSQLDB) which is coded 100% in Java.
I used OS/2 and eComStation until I reached the point that I could not
install it on my new hardware, and the OS/2 version of OOo worked just
fine without Java, including databases using other dbms solutions. I
even used HSQLDB under eComStation until it reached the point they
needed a realease of Java later than 1.4.1. After that I was unable to
use later versions of HSQLDB.

Yes, I´ve seen those reports, but nothing was more specific than "Base
runs slow on JRE7" or " "AOO couldn´t detect the installed Java 7", if
I remember correctly.
I wish those reports could be translated into bugs.sun.com or OpenJDK
defect reports, which can then be *confirmed* by the JRE/OpenJDK devs
as a known defect. Until then, those are unconfirmed reports.

You lose nothing by trying. The JRE7 can be later uninstalled if it
doesn´t suit your needs.
My point was, that it´s a bit unreasonable to complain because an old
java version is getting EOL´d, as that was the case with Sun
Microsystems on every past version at some point. ie I see nobody
complaining that Java 1.1, or 1.2, or 1.3 or even 1.4 is no longer
supported. Java´s philosphy has always been "use the latest JRE, and
your apps just keep running, if not, it´s a bug".
There´s good reasons to always use the latest available JRE, from
security to performance and features point of view.
Also, the subject line of your email was inflammatory "Oracle bad
news", which as usual can quickly degenerate into "bad Oracle is
making Java non-free" by the usual spinners. When it should actually
have read "Java 6 is getting phased out".
Oracle initially planned Java 6 EOL´d by the middle of this year and
postponed the EOL´d date already to give enough time for everyone to
plan accordingly...
Feb 2012: Oracle commutes end of life on Java 6
http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Oracle-commutes-end-of-life-on-Java-6-1437594.html
"Oracle has postponed the planned end of life for Java SE 6.
Originally, JDK (Java Development Kit) and Java SE 6 were due to reach
end of life in July 2012, but that date has been pushed back to
November 2012. Oracle says the move is to allow more time for the
transition to JDK 7 and the company has updated the support roadmap to
reflect that change. "
August 2012: Java 6 to be supported until February 2013
http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Java-6-to-be-supported-till-Feb-2013-1663922.html
So the EOL date has been postponed twice already. Very few people can
say they have not heard about it before. JRE6 is at UPDATE 37 already,
that´s higher than every past versions of Java....
Plus, the Java 6 download page at
http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_6.xml
...clearly states "We highly recommend downloading and installing Java
7. The latest release for Java contains many new features, performance
enhancements, and bug fixes to improve the running of Java Applets or
applications. Java SE 6 End of Public Updates: After February 2013,
Oracle will no longer post updates of Java SE 6 to its public download
sites. Existing Java SE 6 downloads already posted as of February 2013
will remain accessible in the Java Archive on Oracle Technology
Network. Developers and end-users are encouraged to update to more
recent Java SE versions that remain available for public download. "
So, it strikes me a little bit odd that some people come with a "OMG
bad Oracle is killing Java 6, the sky is falling" attitude when it´s
clear that Java 6 was getting phased out for over a year.

Fernando,
From my reading the postings on this forum, it is my understanding that
there are (were?) problems running Java7 and AOO/LO. I, and probably
many others on this forum, have been sticking with Java6 until these
problems were resolved. From what you say, maybe they are and I should
take another look at Java7.

Why does people always feel the need to jump into "panic mode" inmediately??
Java 6 is old, Java 6 is EOL.
Java 7 is already mature and Java 8 is coming next.
Java is always -to the degree of possibility- backwards compatible. I
have run desktop Java apps which were coded at the time of Java 1.2
aka Java2 release and those run flawlessly.
So, if there is any problem between AOO and Java 7, these issues
should be addressed and bugs fixed, either in AOO code or in the Java
7 / OpenJDK JRE.

I don't have an answer to why this has not been mentioned in this
forum. It has now!
And I just went through the pain of creating an Oracle account to gain
access to their archives for the old (Java 6) versions!
Time to resurrect Blackdown Java?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackdown_Java
What about that Free Software Foundation (GNU) Java? I have a Java RE
called Free Software Foundation 1.4.2 on my Slackware Linux 12.2
system. A look at their website looks like it is no longer active.
Maybe it is time for AOO to either code for Java 7 or remove Java
dependencies altogether.
Keep in mind that AOO is not the only app that uses Java. Mozilla
immediately comes to mind. They will most likely have to change also.
