bq. One last thing; if we could indicate up/down status in the list like 'ring' that could be very helpful, since when confronted with a list of IPs it can be a useful indicator of which node you're actually looking for. Otherwise, +1.

I figured that might have been the motivation.
One alternative would be to use the first token in the list for a given host. Since every host knows the mapping from tokens -> host, we could in fact use _any_ token belonging to a host to identify it.

I wouldn't bother and pick a UUID the first time the node is started and save that in the system tables. Independently of anything else, I think it could be neat to have a way to identify a node independently of it's IP (which in theory could change even if the host itself stay the same) or whether it changes of token during it's lifetime.

We should probably pick a different unique identifier, since IP is not really a unique identifier either. (E.g., host dies, new one joins the cluster with same IP.) This motivated the switch from using IP to using token in the past.

I hate to bikeshed here, but I have a small problem with the use of 'forced removal' in NEWS, because the hierarchy of node removal from least forceful to most forceful is: decommission, removetoken, removetoken force, assassinate. This makes calling removetoken 'forced removal' a little strange, since I would assume that to mean 'removetoken force', and really removetoken alone isn't all that forceful.
Otherwise, everything looks good so far, but we need to decide what to do with hints for a yet-to-be-upgraded node as mentioned above.
