Steve, this is a known issue KAFKA-1163 with a few workarounds.

You can use any Scala version (like 2.10) in your client and it will work fine with the broker even though the broker is compiled with 2.8.0 (the same how python, c, c++ and the rest work with the broker everything is through the wire protocol).

The issue was with the release not with the code so you can create your own artifacts if you are using Scala 2.8.0 and need that version.
