UDF return custom Writable from evaluate method

I created a UDF with the following method signature, however there is
an error when executing a simple query on it:

PacketBytesWritable evaluate(Text text)

What does the error mean?

FAILED: Error in semantic analysis:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Error: name expected at the
position 20 of 'struct<bytes:struct<>>' but '>' is found.
