Yes, we have `arrow.r.vctrs` that we use as a more robust replacement for roundtripping R vectors without table-level metadata. I hadn't considered it carefully at the time...now that I do, I don't think it's at quite at the same level as geoarrow. I would classify its current usage as "internal" (i.e., we reserve the right to change it).

After merging your PR, Conbench analyzed the 6 benchmarking runs that have been run so far on merge-commit 651c875c3f853bc7439a10cca2cf6e04e59c5fdd.
There were no benchmark performance regressions. 🎉
The [full Conbench report](https://github.com/apache/arrow/runs/15469754531) has more details. It also includes information about possible false positives for unstable benchmarks that are known to sometimes produce them.

@paleolimbot you mentioned [in a comment](https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/35800#issuecomment-1565625811) that there is at least one "community extension type" in the R package. Do you think it's worthwhile to include in this list?
