workaround for VELOCITY-537?

In a trial update to velocity 1.5, I have run into the whitespace removal
problem outlined here https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/VELOCITY-537

is there any good workaround that leaves the whitespace removal in place?  We
use the technique quite a bit in some of the more sensitive areas in regards
to formatting and display, so removing the whitespace removal comments would
not be preferable.
