ambari just for monitoring?

Is it possible to just use Ambari for just monitoring and not for the initial provisioning/setup ? Our system is somewhat strange in it's architecture and use of read-only root filesystems, so the per-node install and setup will not work. Using Ambari as the single point for monitoring the Hadoop ecosystem components would be useful.

Thanks.
   Bill.

You could look at the resource providers in the
org.apache.ambari.server.controller.gsinstaller package. They basically
read the cluster definition from an artifact of the gsInstaller
(gsInstaller-hosts.txt). The default metrics providers are still used
for monitoring through Ganglia and JMX.

You can install ganglia and use the Ambari-shipped ganglia metrics w/out using Ambari, I was able to do that on a cluster w/out Ambari server. It's most likely true with Nagios as well.

Re: Ambari root/sudo requirements

Hi Aaron,

Ambari 1.3.x has got the ability to install using sudo.

I'm unsure about rootless installation being on Ambari roadmap as we're
leveraging the package manager of the Linux distribution which required
root privileges ( eg, sudo )

Hope it helps,
Olivier

Ambari root/sudo requirements

Posted by Aaron Cody <ac...@hexiscyber.com>.
hello,
Could somebody shed some light on exactly what it is that Ambari needs
root/sudo access for?

Also, is rootless Ambari on the roadmap? If so, are there any details on
this?

TIA

Hi Bill,

While not directly answering your question re using Ambari this way,
you may want to check out SPM (see http://sematext.com/spm/index.html
) for monitoring and alerting for HBase, HDFS, MapReduce (and Solr,
ElasticSearch, Kafka, and JVM).
