Isn't this really an XSLT FAQ?  See http://www.dpawson.co.uk/xsl/sect2/N7240.html#d60e150 
for some suggestions.  

Can you post a specific full stylesheet that shows where Xalan 
produces incorrect output per the XSLT spec?  If not, we should mark this bug as invalid.  (And yes, I 
know it's sometimes difficult that what browsers want and what XSLT produces isn't always 
matched...)
