Google Summer of Code 2018 Mentor Registration

Dear PMCs,

I'm happy to announce that the ASF has made it onto the list of accepted organizations for
Google Summer of Code 2018! [1,2]

It is now time for mentors to sign up, so please pass this email on to your community and
podlings. If you aren’t already subscribed to mentors@community.apache.org you should do so now else
you might miss important information.

Mentor signup requires two steps: mentor signup in Google's system [3] and PMC acknowledgement.

If you want to mentor a project in this year's SoC you will have to

1. Be an Apache committer.
2. Request an acknowledgement from the PMC for which you want to mentor projects. Use the below
template and *do not forget to copy mentors@community.apache.org*. We will use the email adress you
indicate to send the invite to be a mentor for Apache.

PMCs, read carefully please.

We request that each mentor is acknowledged by a PMC member. This is to ensure the mentor is in good
standing with the community. When you receive a request for acknowledgement, please ACK it and cc
mentors@community.apache.org

Lastly, it is not yet too late to record your ideas in Jira (see my previous emails for details).
Students will now begin to explore ideas so if you haven’t already done so, record your ideas
immediately!

Cheers,

Uli

Re: Google Summer of Code 2018 Mentor Registration

Posted by Maxim Solodovnik <so...@gmail.com>.
Hello Carlos,

I believe there is no need to multi-post so different lists
(Both request and ACK should be sent to "your private list" and mentors@)

I can see no request, and no ACK

Could you please forward it to mentors@ list?
I'll send you invite

Thanks in advance

Re: Google Summer of Code 2018 Mentor Registration

Posted by Carlos Santana <cs...@gmail.com>.
I got ACK from the OpenWhisk PPMC to include OpenWhisk in GSOC 2018

I went ahead and created ideas in JIRA [1]

What are the next steps I need to take to register as a mentor, and any
deadline?

Re: Google Summer of Code 2018 Mentor Registration

Any podlings participating in GSOC this year?
(strongly recommended!)

See below for mentor registration procedure - mentors need
acknowledgement from someone else on your private@podling.incubator list
(aka the podling PMC). Note that you do NOT normally need ACK from the
Incubator PMC. [1]

-

Terminology: Your GSOC "mentors" are probably different from your
existing Incubator "mentors"! The GSOC mentor can be any of the
committers of your podling (that the PPMC deem suitable for mentoring a
student fresh to your code base).

Later your incubator mentors can assist in how to give the students
access, e.g. how to process pull requests or ask for ICLAs. Your PPMC is
free to decide when/if to grant a successful GSOC student committership.

See my separate email [2] on how to register GSOC ideas in JIRA to
attract potential students.

Dear PMCs,

I'm happy to announce that the ASF has made it onto the list of accepted
organizations for
Google Summer of Code 2018! [1,2]

It is now time for mentors to sign up, so please pass this email on to your
community and
podlings. If you aren’t already subscribed to mentors@community.apache.org
you should do so now else
you might miss important information.

Mentor signup requires two steps: mentor signup in Google's system [3] and

If you want to mentor a project in this year's SoC you will have to

1. Be an Apache committer.
2. Request an acknowledgement from the PMC for which you want to mentor
projects. Use the below
template and *do not forget to copy mentors@community.apache.org*. We will
use the email adress you
indicate to send the invite to be a mentor for Apache.

PMCs, read carefully please.

We request that each mentor is acknowledged by a PMC member. This is to
ensure the mentor is in good
standing with the community. When you receive a request for
acknowledgement, please ACK it and cc
mentors@community.apache.org

Lastly, it is not yet too late to record your ideas in Jira (see my
previous emails for details).
Students will now begin to explore ideas so if you haven’t already done so,
record your ideas
immediately!

If we're addressing updating the OWASP usage in XSS API for SLING-7231, I'd
suggest we also handle the same for the encode EL Function / Tag in JSP
Taglibs. Should I just append it to the issue or create another issue?

I've added some issue labels. The question is - who is willing to be a

Fwd: Google Summer of Code 2018 Mentor Registration

Posted by Radu Cotescu <ra...@apache.org>.
Hi,

Is this something we could try this year? I've recently stumbled (again)
upon an issue that could be an interesting summer project:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SLING-7231
The issue in question is fairly isolated from the rest of the stack, so the
ramping-up period should be rather short, and IMO it would be a win-win
situation.

Do we have other proposals that make sense?

Any ideas that we'd like to promote for GSoC should be on JIRA, labeled
with 'gsoc2018' [4].

Cheers,
Radu

Dear PMCs,

I'm happy to announce that the ASF has made it onto the list of accepted
organizations for
Google Summer of Code 2018! [1,2]

It is now time for mentors to sign up, so please pass this email on to your
community and
podlings. If you aren’t already subscribed to mentors@community.apache.org
you should do so now else
you might miss important information.

Mentor signup requires two steps: mentor signup in Google's system [3] and
PMC acknowledgement.

If you want to mentor a project in this year's SoC you will have to

1. Be an Apache committer.
2. Request an acknowledgement from the PMC for which you want to mentor
projects. Use the below
template and *do not forget to copy mentors@community.apache.org*. We will
use the email adress you
indicate to send the invite to be a mentor for Apache.

PMCs, read carefully please.

We request that each mentor is acknowledged by a PMC member. This is to
ensure the mentor is in good
standing with the community. When you receive a request for
acknowledgement, please ACK it and cc
mentors@community.apache.org

I've added a couple github issues with the GSoC label and added them to the
comdev JIRA list as well. Go ahead and add some ideas. Even if they don't
get picked up by GSoC folks, they could be good summer intern ideas.

Here is the email for becoming a mentor for Google Summer of Code this

the steps below. Becoming a mentor doesn’t mean that you are required to
mentor a project, so if you are on the fence it’s best to go ahead and sign
up.

it might be a private mailing list, if so, the archive is only visible
to Apache members.

Just a guess, not for sure.

Also, I can't find the mail list(mentors@community.apache.org) from https://lists.apache.org/

I am using this foxmail address to sub mentors mail list, is this the reason?

Hi, I have tried to subscribe the mentors@community.apache.org , and received/confirmed the mail. But nothing more happened.

I also send this mail to the mail list:
--------------
SkyWalking PMC,

please acknowledge my request to become a mentor for Google Summer of Code 2018 projects for Apache
SkyWalking.

I would like to receive the mentor invite to wusheng@apache.org

And I already start a ticket for GSoC student: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COMDEV-247 in that topic. A student from Tongji University, China, has been interested in that topic.

But I only received the mail returned from skywalking private mail list: private@skywalking.apache.org

Can some one help me out? Is there anything wrong?

Cheers,

Uli
