[users@httpd] how to let user log in restricted directory this way.
if you click my page:
http://apidb.org/restricted
a windown will pop up and asking you input user name and password then let
you in.
This is the apache way to protect the directoy restricted.
But I want a page instead of the windown to come out. in the page besides
the usename and password fileds, i can
give user more informaion like "you need register before getting in" and
give link to theregistration page, Is there a way to do that?
Thanks

Well, you can use both, but you'll still get the box popping up :)
If you are an experience C programmer (or know one), then modify the Apache
source to provide a page......this could me quite a major job though.

Thanks for your advice
I know how to write a program in perl or servlet asking for username and
password and and privide more infomation for users.
The question is in this case. Is there still a way i can take advantage of
the apache's protection for restricted directory? i mean i can still use
something like .htaccess to controll the access to restricted?
Thanks

Yep, but it's not an Apache function.
Use a CGI language like PHP or Perl, and program it yourself :)
Sorry, but that's the only way I know of...
