Application Development Procedure

I've never developed an open source database web app.
Since each open source product only documents its part
of the whole process, I've had some trouble finding a
documented step-by-step procedure for doing the whole
thing. So I tried to make one by patching together
bits from the documentation of various open source
products. My goal is a complete procedure from
"install open source products" to "browse application
start page". If anyone with experience knows where I
could find something like this out there, or could
check what I have so far, I'd really appreciate it.

Here's what I have so far:
http://www.geocities.com/topdowndan/create_an_application.txt

Thanks in advance for any help with this,
Dan

Yes, I am only looking for detail at this high level.

I think that a one or two page document with this
course level of detail over the entire app development
process would be pretty helpful for people like me who
are getting started. I think there is plenty of
documentation already to explain each individual step,
so I have no intention of duplicating such detail.
But I haven't found anything that just lists all the
steps at this level.

I guess I just feel that most of the documentation for
open source is very useful once you've gotten started,
but it's hard to ever get started confident that
you're doing things the right way and not missing
anything important or overlooking a big timesaver.

Except for the download links for a couple products,
there isn't anything tied to a version, so there isn't
much to keep updated. But even if there were, the
document should really only be one or two pages long.

I see what you mean now about the different steps for the different
architectures. You are giving yourself a huge scope to deal with! It
strikes me that your document would constantly become out-of-date with
each new software release. Or are you going to leave it at the depth of
detail which you have now?

This is Blueglue: http://www.openlogic.com/index.php

With blueglue, you download this application and then
check the boxes for, say, MySQL, Hibernate, JBoss, and
Middlegen, and blueglue installs everything on your
computer.

I am just getting started. I haven't developed any
apps yet, so picking out software is part of what I
need to do. I'm looking for the documentation of a
whole app development procedure. I know that some
people use EJB, some Expresso and some Hibernate. So,
I included in my process outline steps for all of them
and notated which steps apply to which persistence
strategy using the symbols on the left.

I'm just winging this since I've never created an open
source app yet, so I'd appreciate any input or
corrections from someone who has done it. Here is an
updated version of the procedure:

http://www.geocities.com/topdowndan/create_an_application.txt

Thanks,
Dan

What's blueglue? It sounds like maven (which is open-source)

You don't actually list anywhere what software you are using. It looks
like you are using Hibernate and EJB together. Is that logical? Why not
use CMP, or ditch EJB?

LOL. Thanks, David. I think if the whole open source
community was one company, we wouldn't even need a
book. We'd probably just have a wizard.

Dan,

I skimmed over your steps outline and it looks like you should turn that
into a book for beginning contractors or webapp developers. It might sell a
few books too. :)

David
