Socket Appender Customization

"In particular, if the network link to the the server is down, the
client will be blocked. " (Class SocketAppender, from Log4j Javadoc at
http://jakarta.apache.org/log4j/docs/api/org/apache/log4j/net/SocketAppender.html)

Is there a way, maybe customizing socket (setting time out), to avoid
this situation?
I'm working on a project which this situation (network link down) is
common between client and server. So if the client is blocked every time
it happens, it's very bad.

   Thanks in advance,
   Fernanda.
