[users@httpd] Apache Startup Fails

Hi.

I a newbie to Apache and Linux.
I have recently installed a copy of Red Hat Linux 9 where I use Apache
2.0 (Build 2.0.40).
It started well and I had the server running but something has happened
to my Configuration Files resulting in Apache fail to start.

I have tried to solve this but my knowledge of Apache is very limited
but I'm going to learn more about it but noew I just can not make it run
at all so that means I can not continue my task of learning to use and
configure Apache :-)

I browsed the FAQ and the archives but could not find anything there at
first glance but hopefully this is a esy task for you guys...

When I try to start Apache the following error appears in the error_log:

--start--

[Sun Oct 26 22:41:34 2003] [alert] (22002)Name or service not known:
mod_unique_id: unable to find IPv4 address of "redhat"
Configuration Failed!

--end--

I have no idea what I have done to mess the configuration files but I
have done something stupid.
That's for sure...

Can someone please help me?

Øyvind

Apache doesn't really like that :)

Btw, you are using a pretty old version (2.0.40) and you should upgrade
anyway, so my advice is to remove your current installation (it's an RPM,
isn't it?), and then install the latest (2.0.48) from source. Then you'll
get a fresh httpd.conf.

I experienced that now...
I hoped that apache had created a new conf file but it didn't.
Same problem still - Apache refuses to start.

I cannot find a default conf file in /etc/httpd/conf
But here is the content of that dir listed:

--start--

drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 Oct 26 23:33 .
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Oct 10 21:43 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 26 23:33 httpd.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 34924 Oct 26 11:23 httpd.conf.bak
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12959 Feb 25 2003 magic
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           37 Oct 10 21:43 Makefile ->
../../../usr/share/ssl/certs/Makefile
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Oct 10 21:43 ssl.crl
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Oct 10 21:43 ssl.crt
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Feb 25 2003 ssl.csr
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Oct 10 21:43 ssl.key
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Feb 25 2003 ssl.prm

--end--

As you can see I renamed the file httpd.conf to httpd.conf.bak to test
if apache could create a new fresh conf file but as I sad it didn't...
Then I created a blank conf file called httpd.conf and tried to start
apache but it still fails.

No, Apache will not. Just overwrite httpd.conf with a copy of
httpd.conf-default (or similar) that should also be in your conf/
directory.

Hi again.

Sorry to bother you with stupid questions...
Can I just rename the httpd.conf file and restart httpd?
Will Apache then create a new working config file so that I just put in
my DocumentRoot etc?

Hi again!

Yes Robert this build is very old and it's installed using a RPM from
the RHL 9 CD.
Yes I'm going to reinstall the Server in a couple of days since I have
bought new Server Hardware so I'm going to install the latest version
then.

Yes Jonas the "tedhat" does appear in a Directive.
As Joshua says it is the ServerName in the httpd.conf file and is also
located in the /etc/hosts file.

I deleted the module and apache seems to run normally so my web sites
are up and running for a couple of days when I will shutdown the server
to reinstall on new hardware.

Thanks everyone :-)

Øyvind

This means that apache thinks the server's name is "redhat", either
because that is used in a ServerName dirctive, or because it is
specified in /etc/hosts and apached queried the OS for its name.
Unfotunately, there is no reverse mapping of this name to an IP address,
which mod_unique_id needs.

Fortunately, you almost certainly don't need mod_unique_id. So the easy
fix is to simply remove that module.

Joshua.

Does the word "redhat" show up in any directive in httpd.conf?
