now I'm getting excited ....

Well ... I've gotten our legacy code integrated into phoenix quite
nicely ...whew!

So now I'm eager to start using some of the REAL stuff ....

Does anyone have any examples .... or even a short snippet (pseudo code
welcome) on
how/where to use Excalibur's Component Manager and
thread management code (yes, I know it's still in the scratchpad ...)?

All help is much appreciated.

Im not sure exactly what you asking for. There is a ThreadManager service
inside cornerstone that allows you to ask for named ThreadPools and so forth.

When you want to see a _real_ application using Avalon then check out:
  http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/
But it's not that "short snippelt" your're asking for ;-)
