A textbook introducing Xerces suggested the follow test: java sax.SAXCount 
data/products.xml

I see we need a change to sax.Counter but I still get the error message 'Error: 
Unable to instantiate parser (org.apache.xerces.parsers.SAXParser)'.

Maybe there was something missing in the installation of Xerces.
