Batik 1.5 and MacOSX10.2.6 startup problems
Hi Brendan, Thomas and other MacOSX Batik Users!
I read your thread (july 2003) on the Batik Mailinglist on trying to get
Squiggle running under MacOSX10.2.6. I ran into exactly the same problem?
I read that the installed fonts could be the problem?
Have you figured out which fonts could cause the problem?
Here is my configuration:
Batik 1.5
MacOSX10.2.6
Java 1.4.1_01
The error output is as follows:

any idea what could be wrong? I have to admit that I don't know anything about
Fonts on MacOSX, since I just recently switched from Linux/Windows to MacOSX and
am pretty new on Mac ...
Thanks for any hint,

This is our current suspicion, as the simple test application we
put togeather (just gets the list of fonts) failed on these systems.

As far as I know no one has tried to identify at least one font that
causes the problem.

This is also why we conclude it has to do whith what fonts are installed.

Unfortunately no, CSS has rather complex rules on how to match font
names, this forces us to get the entire list of available fonts and
canonicalize it so that we can match the string the user provides.
For example 'timesnewroman' must match the installed font
'Times New Roman'.

I have essentially the same configuration, and don't get that problem,
but I do get a bunch of annoying error messages whenever I start up
squiggle (or use batik-rasterizer on an SVG containing text):

Also note the times -- Java is taking a very long time looking at fonts
that have no relevance to the current job. Presumably this is mostly an
Apple-Java problem rather than a Batik problem, but is there any way
Batik could get Java to only look at the fonts it wants, instead of all
of them?

Re: Batik 1.5 and MacOSX10.2.6 startup problems
Posted by Brendan Lane Larson <Br...@yahoo.com>.
Thomas / Andreas / et al,
I'm help in the effort to solve this problem by allocating resources by
allocating my Mac for use with different environments for testing
purposes. For instance, I can create several Mac OS X 10.2 disk images
to boot from (for example one image with JDK 1.3.1, another image with
JDK 1.4.1, yet another with the new JDK 1.4.1 beta from Apple, etc.),
and can coordinate and schedule a testing time with any of the Batik
developers here to step through the various environments to try and
determine what font or change in environment triggers the problem (I
can also overarch such an effort by talking on the phone or setting up
a chat session if that helps). If anyone's interested in doing this
with me, please email me off list and we'll coordinate a collaborative
approach.
Cheers,
-Brendan

You have access to the source I am more than willing to work with
people that want to make modifications.

Do I hear someone volunteering? I have an OS X computer but it
doesn't run 10.2.6 (it is still running 10.1), this may change in
the near future but currently I don't have reasonable access to a
machine running 10.2.x. Even if I did there isn't much I could
do about this problem, I don't have any extra fonts installed (and it
seems to work with the default fonts).

The way Batik will be put to good use is if people contribute to it.
Everyone who works with Batik shares the responsability (and credit) for
making it good and useful.

Posted by manuel berney <ma...@urbanet.ch>.
i forget to say rotateTest is the main class
it use a JSVGCanvas as shown in the batik exemple
motor is a runnable used to do the rotate animation
gearTrain is used to do the svg transformation on level6.svg
Cheers manu

Batik 1.5 and MacOSX10.2.6 Java141 rotateTest
Posted by manuel berney <ma...@urbanet.ch>.
i'm a batik newbie and i usually code with XP and netbeans but i' m trying
to do my development with OSX and netbeans now.
I have a problem to rotate an svg element with osx .
Attatch 3 classes + 1 svg file
motor,java, gearTrain.java, rotateTest.java and level6.svg
The code works fine on XP but my rotation isn't regular on OSX. What's wrong
with it ??
cheers manu

I've filed bug reports. I have no solution.

What do you mean by "documented"? Did you file a bug report, but the issue is
still unresolved, or did you find a solution, that you documented? If yes, could
you point us to your solution?
Thomas DeWeese suggested to update to the newest JavaVM that Apple released on
2003-09-08 (Java 1.4.1 Update 1) - but I had this already installed. My "java
-version" output is as follows:
------
[Andreas-Neumanns-Computer:~/svg/selectionlist] an% java -version
java version "1.4.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_01-69.1)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_01-24, mixed mode)
[Andreas-Neumanns-Computer:~/svg/selectionlist] an%
------
I still suspect one of the font files in the "/Library/Fonts" directory.
Unfortunately I have no idea which files should, and which should not reside
here. I have the following types/extensions of files in this directory:
* Files without extensions (no idea wheter these are TrueType or Type1 files?)
* .ttf files
* .dfont files (what are these?)
* there is one file that is called "AdobeFnt07.lst" - do I actually need this or
may this file cause the problem?
Finally, I generated two of the TrueType fonts myself
(topographische_signaturen.ttf, cave_signatures.ttf), using CorelDraw. Do you
think, these could cause the problem?
Is the JRE reading the font-directory each time it starts, or do I need to
reboot the computer, in order to force JRE to reread the directory?
Here is again my complete listing:

Hi Anthony,
Great! Thanks for checking and reporting on this. At least we can
see some light at the end of the tunnel. I am also interested if the
performance seems to have increased any.

Re: Panther (Mac OX 10.3) fixes Batik startup problems
Posted by "Anthony J. Starks" <aj...@comcast.net>.
Some corrections to the startup timings. Cold-start startup of
squiggle is about 56 sec, with warm start startup times about 30
seconds.

Hi Anthony,
Thanks for running the tests.

Does this 16sec vary at all from 'cold start' to 'warm start'?
So on windows there is a _very_ large difference between the start time
for the first run and the second run (I think because the class files
get cached in Memory). Also is this from a 'jar' file or from class files?
I would guess jar file.
Did you use the
'Preferences->Browser Options->Optional Behaviors->Show Debug Trace'
for the following times? I would guess not (since they aren't in millis).
For this to show up you would have to start from the terminal window:
% java -jar svg-browser samples/anne.svg
This gives millisec times for each phase of rendering a document:
Document load started...
Document load completed in 100 ms
GVT build started...
GVT build completed in 220 ms
GVT rendering preparation...
GVT rendering prepared in 10 ms
GVT rendering started...
GVT rendering completed in 220 ms

Re: Panther (Mac OX 10.3) fixes Batik startup problems
Posted by "Anthony J. Starks" <aj...@comcast.net>.
Here are some informal timings of Batik 1.5 under Panther;
unfortunately, I don't have comparisons with the older platform. I'm
hoping others can fill this in for both older Mac and other platforms
as well.
Environment:
Batik 1.5
Powerbook G4 667MhZ, 512 Mb Ram
Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)
java version "1.4.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_01-99)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_01-27, mixed mode)
Time from startup to first display of squggle: 16 seconds
After startup, I timed the load and display times for selected files in
the samples directory:
anne.svg 2 sec
gradients.svg : 1.5 sec
logoShadowOffset: < 1 sec
mapSpain.svg 16 sec
textRotateShadows: 13 sec
Here are the transcoding (svg to pdf ) times for all of the files in
the samples directory

Re: Panther (Mac OX 10.3) fixes Batik startup problems
Posted by Brendan Lane Larson <Br...@yahoo.com>.
Andreas,
Hopefully Apple will make build 1.4.1_01-99 available for OS X 10.2 as
there's no reason not that I can think of not to keep supporting 10.2
for quite some time.
Lets keep our eyes out for a build 1.4.1_01-99 update for 10.2 ...
Cheers,
-Brendan

Anthony, did you notice any performance difference with Panther and the new Java
release?
Since I tweaked my current MacOSX laptop quite a bit towards Open Source
(Postgres, fink, latex, etc.) I hesitate to upgrade to Panther unless I have a
good reason ;-)
Thanks for any info,
Andreas

Panther (Mac OX 10.3) fixes Batik startup problems
Posted by "Anthony J. Starks" <aj...@comcast.net>.
The previously reported bugs (Bugzilla Bug 23289) where Squiggle and
other apps were throwing errors on startup, have been fixed with the
update to Mac OS X 10.3, aka Panther. Note that the Java version has
been updated. On my previous system (10.2.8) it said:
java version "1.4.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_01-39)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_01-14, mixed mode)
Under Panther:
java version "1.4.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_01-99)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_01-27, mixed mode)
The FontTest program that was posted by Thomas DeWeese that previously
threw errors now says:

Hi Brendan,
That was me. Yes Apple reimplemented Java2D on top of Quartz
rather than using the graphics engine that is used on Solaris/Linux/Windows.
So it is not surprising that the performance is different. My experience
has also been that Java2D (and consequently Batik) is significantly
slower on Mac OS X compared to Windows/Linux/Solaris. I don't have a
good explanation for this unless there is some hidden mismatch under the hood.
Apparently Apple can 'accelerate' drawing to the screen but Batik
currently never draws SVG directly to the screen, it always draws to an
offscreen buffer. It is possible that we use a non-optimal BufferedImage
type, but I don't think this is is the issue since it is the type closest
to what Apple has used for it's offscreen GWorlds - although row alignment
may be different.

Hello!
Sorry for my late reply. Had been busy teaching SVG ...
I found out that three fonts let FontTest.js crash. One is called
"CommonBullets", probably imported from my Windows font collection. The other
two are self-created fonts, that I exported some years ago from CorelDRAW. I
have to try to regenerate them with a newever version of Corel or Macromedia
Fontographer. Maybe I can resolve the problem.
But thanks a lot, Thomas and others for identifying the problem and providing
the FontTest.jar program.
Here is my complete list of supported fonts (output from FontTest.jar):

We're making progress, its now been proven that the problem is within a
small method, provided by Thomas DeWeese earlier today, not with Batik
or any other Java application.
Has anyone worked further with the FontTest code? I'd like to spend
some time tomorrow hunting down a solution that works on OS X. The
result may mean the addition of OS X specific code to the standard Java
way of getting system fonts. Does anyone have more thoughts on how to
best approach this?
Once there is a solution it should most certainly be posted for the
whole OS X Java community some where. Then, lets turn our attention to
why OS X graphics are actually slower for most Java applications...

These are almost certainly the same failure. The NPE would be hidden
in squiggle because it happens while loading a class.

both results are still failures.

hi,
I don't know much about javascript.
But you can do something like this:
1) as long as you can obtain SVG DOM you could sent it back to server
2) from the server side(servlet, jsp, cgi, php, asp, etc) you can email back
to the user or display it on browser

Well I wouldn't abuse get/postURL like that. As it turns out Rhino the
JavaScript implementation we use allows you to directly import classes/packages
into your JavaScript.
This is done like this:
importPackage(java.awt);
frame = new Frame("JavaScript"); // Create a Java awt Frame.
This gives you access to all the Java.io classes and what not.
For more information on this take a look at:
http://www.mozilla.org/rhino/scriptjava.html

With Java you can read the contents of directories etc...

Hi, Tonny -
Thanks for the quick reply. I had found that, and suspected it might be
relevant, but wasn't sure how to use it. I haven't coded in Java for quite
some time. Has anyone got a pointer on where to start to make a build that,
say, saves a file when postURL is called, and opens one for getURL? I'd be
very grateful if anyone has such a framework lying around.
Also, can this be used to "discover" files with a particular extension, or
will I need to know the names of the files beforehand?
Many thanks-

Saving To a File
Posted by Doug Schepers <do...@schepers.cc>.
Hi, Batik newbie question-
I find myself wanting to save content generated within some of my
SVG+JavaScript apps. On Windows/IE, this is not a problem... I can use the
FileSystemObject. But for Linux and Mac, this is not an option.
Is it possible to create a Batik distribution to allow me to save a file
locally (or, less desirably, to append to an existing file)? Has this
already been done?
Thanks-
-Doug

Well the warnings are annoying but not fatal. What I am interested in
are the people who get exceptions thrown when running the example.

Hi all,
I've attached a small application that just reads the available fonts.
I've attached both source and a precompiled jar file (use which ever you
are comfortable with). Can people who are running Mac OS X 10.2.x let me
know if your results with squiggle match your results with this test app
(either both succeed, both fail, or a mismatch)?
This may also be easier to use for finding the 'bad font' than
starting squiggle.

It sounds like they must have the same problem, do they give any indication
of what the bad font is?

So one option would be to try and code around the problem. This would
still 'cripple' the font matching on Mac OS X for systems with a 'bad font'.
So the code could do the following:
1) Check if the font name is in the font name mapping, if so you are done.
2) Try creating the Font with just 'new Font("Foo");' - if the font
name exactly matches the installed font this will find it. If it
works canonicalize the name and add it to the font name mapping.
3) If #2 didn't work then try and read the list of installed fonts (which may
fail on Mac OS X - I can have it generate a warning message that
fonts may not match properly due to a bad font on the system).
If reading works canonicalize them and try step 1 again.
4) If we still don't find it fall back to the next font on the list of
CSS fonts.

Hi Andreas,
This font issue on OS X seems to be a thorn to a number of leading Java
applications. This morning I fired up IDEA, up my favorite Java IDE and
there was not one bit of readable text in the GUI. The 1.4.1 Java
update form Apple had messed with the default system font, so the
solution was to select another font, counting button shapes through a
set of dialogs to do it!
For the heck of it I just downloaded the CodeGuide 6.1demo and what do
you know, it complains about a "Bad Font" that must be removed before
CodeGuide can be installed.
It would seem that detailed knowledge of the OS X font system for Java
developers has become imperative.

Thomas

Batik for OS X,
I'm holding off from updating to OS X 10.2.8, using 10.2.6 without
removing any fonts and running the latest CVS version Squiggle's splash

Re: Batik 1.5 and MacOSX10.2.6 startup problems
Posted by Brendan Lane Larson <Br...@yahoo.com>.
Andreas,
When I previously had the Batik 1.5 Beta installed (which is when
Squiggle was working fine for me), I also noticed comparative slowness
relative to a Windows XP Pro (on Intel Celeron processor) ... the
laptop I use quite a bit is not too dissimilar to your configuration (1
GB RAM, 800 MhZ G4 processor). I seem to recall from SVG Open that
someone had stated that Apple had done quite a good job with the JDK
implementation (including Hotspot), but if my memory serves me correct
(I don't have my SVG Open notes in front of me at the moment), I think
someone also said that Apple's implementation of GUI related classes
(Java 2D API? Swing?) was a bit "unique" (perhaps in terms of
integrating with Apple's Quartz windowing)?
It just struck me -- I wonder if the following is a possibility --
Apple (not too long ago -- less than a year ago I think?) introduced
Quartz Extreme which works only on certain Macintosh hardware that has
the necessary video card hardware required to run Quartz Extreme. Prior
to Quartz Extreme I believe Apple referred to Quartz as "Quartz 2D" ...
and according to the Apple documentation on Quartz (see the Quartz
Extreme PDF located under the heading "Technology Briefs" at
http://www.apple.com/macosx/ which is dated as being published in
October 2002), it states:
> The Mac OS X graphics system consists of Quartz 2D, which renders
> fonts as well as vector
> and bitmap graphics; OpenGL for generating 3D graphics; and QuickTime

There is a side bar in this document regarding fonts in recent Quartz
updates (Quartz Extreme ??) that states:
> Richer font support
>
> • The default instance of Multiple Master (PostScript) fonts is
> supported.
>
> • An ATM Lite PostScript rasterizer is built in, eliminating the need

Might there be a difference (worth looking into) with respect to the
set of system fonts that are loaded onto a system (difference between
Mac OS X 10.2 systems that are configured to use hardware acceleration
on Macs that have video circuitry that meet the minimal Quartz Extreme
requisites v.s. systems that are not configured to take advantage of
Quartz Extreme)?
This might make sense since Thomas DeWeese has previously had only
access for testing on a Mac OS X 10.1 system (which is well before the
era of Quartz enhancements including Quartz Extreme which is only
available on Mac OS X 10.2 and with certain video hardware minimal
requisites). Hardware acceleration should not necessarily make a
difference in the set of fonts that Apple includes with OS X 10.2 for a
particular Macintosh, but it still might be possible that the font sets
are different (Mac OS X 10.2 Software Update application appears to do
specific system configurations in the form of optimization).
Maybe comparing Squiggle from Batik final release 1.5 running on a Mac
OS X 10.2 configuration on Mac that does not have minimal video
hardware requisites to run Quartz Extreme v.s. a Mac that can run
Quartz Extreme would be a worthwhile lab test to run? Do any Batik
users here have a Mac that is not physically capable of running Quartz
Extreme yet is running Mac OS X 10.2.x with different JDK installations
that can be tested with Squiggle? Below are the requisites for Quartz
Extreme from the PDF document aforementioned:
> System Requirements
> Quartz Extreme
> GPU requirements

The good news is - that I got Batik running on my system! after I removed all
fonts from /Library/Fonts and from /Users/myUser/Library/Fonts
The other good news: the quality seems ok, same than in Linux/Windows.
I still have to find out which of the font files caused the problem ... I send
more feedback when I know more about it.
The mirulous thing is, that still a lot of fonts appear in the Apple Macintosh
applications (f.e. TextEdit). Are there more places where MacOSX looks for fonts?
Has anyone a good source on MacOSX and font administration.
----
the bad news is, that Squiggle feels a lot slower than on Linux and Windows. I
used it regularly on Linux and Windows, where it felt equally fast. But on
MacOSX it feels considerably slower, though my Machine is up to date: 1GB Ram,
1Ghz PPC G4 processor.
Any idea why it is so slow on MacOSX? Every time it rerenders the DOM-tree (the
part where it says "Rendering internal tree...") it is very slow. To give you
an idea: the mapSpain.svg example included with the distribution takes 16 to 18
seconds to render on MacOSX - I don't have a windows/Linux machine currently to
compare, but I had the impression it was considerably faster.
All the best,

FYI, I've documented the font problems with Batik/Mac OSX/JVM 1.4 using
both the Apple and Apache bug tracking systems.

Re: Batik 1.5 and MacOSX10.2.6 startup problems

Fellow Batik and OS X developers,
I'm glad to see this unresolved issue surfacing now, again. With my
university workload finished as of this past Friday, I'm back on full
time development, on my own project.
I have a number of concerns still lingering about Batik, which I can
not truly finalize if it will not run on my system. My configuration is
OS X 10.2.6, Java 1.4.1_01 and Batik 1.5. I will get the latest CVS
version tomorrow and give that a try...
I would think that some one in the inner circle of Batik developers
would have access to the OS X platform, test and run it there on each
major release. Especially knowing, that OS X is an excellent
leading-edge graphic platform, where Batik should run very well and
some of the more innovative software developers choose work as well.
This way Batik can be put to good use, instead of fading out of memory.
Best regards to all,
Thomas J. Buhr
