adding more crawls to crawled

When I was nutching I noticed you have to delete "crawled" to re crawl
into crawled (confirmed by Nutch WIki) 
 
Is there another way to crawl more sites while preserving "crawled"?
Also, also is their a way to index "crawled" while a crawl is crawling?
