questions about building tomcat 4.1

Hello everybody. I'm trying to understand how tomcat works by compiling a
debug build. I'm trying to build tomcat 4.1.24 with Jdk 1.3 on Debian 3.0.
Here is a snapshot of my base directory.

commons-beanutils-1.6.1
commons-collections-2.1
commons-daemon
commons-dbcp-1.0
commons-digester-1.4.1
commons-fileupload-1.0-beta-1
commons-logging-1.0.2
commons-modeler-1.0
commons-pool-1.0.1
jaf-1.0.2
jakarta-regexp-1.2
jakarta-servletapi-4
jakarta-struts-1.0.2
jakarta-taglibs
jakarta-taglibs-20030416.tar.gz
jakarta-tomcat-4.1.24-src
jakarta-tomcat-connectors-4.1.24-src
jakarta-tomcat-jasper
jars
java_xml_pack-summer-02_01
javamail-1.3
javaservice
javax
jsse1.0.3_01
junit3.8.1
mx4j-1.1.1
xerces-2_4_0

I followed the instructions in building.txt in jakarta-tomcat-4.1.24-src/ but
I wasn't able to get these files.

# ----- Tyrex Data Source, version 1.0 -----
# ----- PureTLS Extension, version 0.9 or later -----
# ----- NSIS, version 1.9x ----- NOT DONE!
# ----- Java Transaction API (JTA), version 1.0.1 or later ----- NOT DONE!

the build fails when it reaches source code in jakarta-tomcat-jasper/jasper2/
it can't resolve references to classes found in servlet.jar. Is there a
reason why classpath is missing jar files ?
