YouTube Channel for Apache?

I was thinking of starting up a Youtube channel for Apache OpenOffice,
where we could post short videos, demos, tutorials, etc. While
investigating how this could be done I came across the following page
that describes how a registered non-profit can set up a special kind
of YouTube Channel, with increased upload capabilities, as well as
other benefits.

Aside from benefits related to YouTube, this program also gives free
AdWords, etc. As a registered 501(c)(3), ASF is eligible for this
program.

See: http://www.youtube.com/nonprofits

Is there any interest in doing this at the ASF level?

First: Is it possible to associate existing Youtube videos with a new
channel? So if we create an Apache OpenOffice channel now (or
sub-channel of the Apache Foundation channel) is there any way to get
existing OpenOffice-related videos into it?

Second: Is there anything that can be done short term for new content?
For example, I have a copy of Camtasia that allows be to record
voice-over demos. So no need to look at me (whew!); it just records
the screen. Maybe instead of the 3.4 top features blog post idea
(which was redundant with the readme file it appears) it could be a
"AOO 3.4 top new features" demo/video?

Or, if we looked at the FAQ's for OpenOffice, maybe some of them can
turn into 30 second videos that show the solution?

Hello Drew,

I have recently completed a Java course and worked class projects using test-driven development procedure. I like this form of development and testing on the fly.

Was hoping to do some work for Apache Foundation, either updating existing code or writing a small module in order to gain experience with Java and just the experience of working with large open source outfits like the Apache foundation.

I went through some of the initial info about gaining a mentor and project and signed up to some of the email links, (which is why I am receiving your emails)... but have not heard from anyone.

Understand that folks are busy, but if someone could help me get started I believe that, in the long run, I can make a contribution to the Foundation.

I chose the "Droids" incubator project http://incubator.apache.org/projects/droids.html, as one I thought would be interesting to work on.

Can you help me with:
1) contacting a mentor
2) start work on a need in the Droids incubator project
3) perhaps connect with someone that is a developer with ASF in the Austin, Texas area...

Thank you, ahead of time, with any help... understand that you are, probably, a productive busy person so appreciate your time.

Well, first - here is the Apache channel (at least I believe it is the official channel)

http://www.youtube.com/user/TheApacheWay/

So - that has a rather generic tone I'd say - though there is not a lot of content to go on - meaning it isn't really focused to tutorials and such IMO.

However one could create a group under that account, that could then have such a focus.

Hello Sally,

Ah ha - yes that looks much better.
- I like the fellow playing happy birthday on a tin whistle..

Anyway - just to finish a thought - one possibility would be to have
PMCs use the account as a storage area, but not necessarily as the main
display point. I've worked with youtube and used focused play lists,
then delivered those play lists from another page (MediaWiki has a
plugin BTW but I've never used it) via one of the youtube supplied
widgets. That works reasonably well IMO.

Of course one could eschew UTube completely and go with something like
archive.org, build a channel there (they call it something else) - I've
used that also, but only in a very cursory way, it lakes the nice widget
support however - though I believe there is something available now.

Thanks, Drew.

Actually, the official link is http://www.youtube.com/user/TheApacheFoundation

We had a problem with YouTube allowing us to register the "The Apache Software Foundation" for some reason (we must have tried at least 5 times to no avail), so we went ahead with "The Apache Foundation".

None of the other links are officially related to us.

Well it seems like a good idea. For doing this on ASF level I think it is
up to each PMC if they can/want to do this or not whether through using
YouTube or any similar provider.

it is a good opportunity for collaboration

- some one has experience is creating screencasts and can write donw a
short story/explanation
- somebody has a good and clear voice and provide the vioce to the
screencast based on the story
- and others can prepare some intro and credits section

It would be nice if all videos have more or less the same look and feel.
At least on project level.

I can think of many short videos/screencast (2-5 min)
- explaining how to create a new style and apply it
- how to create a content table
- how to use data pilots/pivot tables
- ....

I like the idea
