[Issue 125474] New: Writer Chokes opening large PDF

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125474

          Issue ID: 125474
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Writer Chokes opening large PDF
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.0
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows, all
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: open-import
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: clark@clarkmankin.com

Writer is unable to open very large PDF files. There may be an issue with
insufficient memory allocation? I am enclosing the file in question so that
you can try it yourself.

I personally would prefer using Open Office as my pdf reader of choice, and for
smaller files it works admirably for that purpose. This one is 73 megabytes
and it apparently makes the Writer application choke for lack of memory.

See what you can do, gentlemen. Adobe reader sucks. I'll never use it again
because they bundle malware with their mandatory updates. I can read this pdf
in Google Chrome, but Chrome has no navigation controls to help get around in
such a large pdf and that makes it inconvenient and very ungainly.

This is an area in which Open Office could make a relatively minor adjustment
and become a leader in this niche.

FYI, I'm on a Dell 630D with Vista Business and 8GB of RAM. It's a dual core
Pentium running at 1.8Ghz when Intel doesn't have it throttled down.

--- Comment #4 from Pär Pålhed <pa...@gmail.com> ---
I suspect that @Clark does not have the extension “PDF Import for Apache
OpenOffice” installed since a PDF-file would automatically open in Draw,
instead of in Writer, when the extension is installed. Based on this
observation the “choking” behavior should be considered as a bug in AOO and not
in the extension. I draw this conclusion as well from my attempt to replicate
the bug.

I used a 21MB PDF-file trying to opening it in AOO4.1.0, AOO4.1.1 and other
editors like Microsoft Word and Notepad. In both versions of AOO it takes 9-10
minutes to open the file regardless if the extension is installed or not. I can
repeat the “choking” behavior every time with the test file, as well as with
other PDF-files of similar size. Link to the test file:
http://www.nbb.be/DOC/BA/PDF7MB/2010/201061200010_1.PDF (21.492 KB).

When using Microsoft Word or Notepad the test file opens in seconds. This is
quite a big difference that can give the impression of inadequate functionality
or performance in AOO and thereby risk that users steer away from AAO in favor
of other text editors. This is another context to consider when deciding if to
fix this bug or not.

A dialog box “ASCI Filter Options” is displayed by AOO when the file extension
is not recognized by the Open/Import function, i.e. no supporting extension
file is installed. This is described in the documentation as an attempt to open
the file content using the defined filter options. In my initial replication
efforts I used the default settings – “Character set” is set to “Western Europe
(Windows-1252/WinLatin1)”, “Default fonts” to “Times New Roman”, “Language” to
“English (USA)” and “Paragraph break” to “CR & LF”. As a user I would expect
information to be displayed explaining that the file extension is not supported
and how the user's choice of file type affects the files displayed in the file
chooser as well as what filters that may be used to open or import the file.

Furthermore, by changing “Character set” from default value to “Unicode” I
could make AOO4.1.x crash, even when using very small PDF-files (except for a
blank file). I could not replicate the crash by changing “Character set” to any
other values, or values for any of the other available filter options in this
dialog box. However, as a user I would expect more graceful handling when
changing options, as in general.

AOO isn't able to open PDF and AOO has no PDF-Reader module.
So what you are talking about?

Your arbitrary limit on attachment file sizes prevents me from enclosing the
file in question. If you contact me with instructions I'd be happy to send it
by ftp or I could "hang" the file on my website and let you access it from
there. It's 73,000+ KB which is just a touch in excess of your 1000 KB
limitation!

Opening of PDF documents is accomplished by a volunteer supplied extension --

see: http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/pdf-import-apache-openoffice

PDF import/editing is not part of the OpenOffice indigenous specification.

Please contact the extension developer for further support or comments.
