I think I've narrowed it down a bit. It's a side-effect of what I was trying to
do, namely to reset the whole column to "default" formatting.
If you try:
1. Create a new sheet
2. Type 12/11/11 into cell A1
3. Select the whole column
4. Right-click and choose "Format cells"
The dialog that comes up shows the expected default format of "general number"
but, when I click "OK", it does not reset the formatting for cell A1 to the
default, as I would expect.
