A server for Openmeetings Re: OpenMeetings status (Was: [Incubator Wiki] Update of "March2012" by SebastianWagner)

Hi Tony,

There are requirements for hosting small conferences for ~8 people
(like Apache board):

virtual Ubuntu host
1Gb memory
20 Mbit/s of bandwidth (the more, the better)
25% of modern 2-core processor

I've not seen the Apache Board request such a service - quite the
opposite in fact, there are reasons why a dial in conference is better
for such meetings, this was discussed recently when someone suggested
using Skype or equivalent.

As for other projects the ASF generally discourages any kind of
official synchronous communication as it excludes people in different
time zones and increases the difficulties for people who do not speak
English as a first language. That being said there might be some valid
use cases for this kind of thing. I can imagine some projects running
user focussed Q&A sessions, others might run occasional sessions to
help new developers configure dev machines. I can also imagine it
being useful during GSoC. However, I doubt infra will want to set-up
and maintain such a server unless a reasonable number of projects have
indicated they will use it.

As an OpenMeetings mentor and as a member of the Community Development
PMC I'd be happy to help you figure out what demand really exists
within the ASF. Then, if appropriate, we can then approach infra for
the resources. I note later in this thread it is indicated that
bandwidth is a problem. If there is a compelling enough reason then a
case could be made to increase the available bandwidth, but
demonstration of genuine need must to come first.

They werent banned due to bandwidth constraints, more that they were most likely killing the SVN service for everyone else.

You need to be clear, the only donated hardware we use are machines running at Y! that are part of our larger build farm. They are not intended to run meeting servers. Yes our infrastructure is global, and you are right the infrastructure doesnt neccesarily have to be in the same rack as everything else. But there are still some constraints, for example all locations must be conected to Internet2, or be a direct peer of their service. We also, dont tend to keep spare physical machines around as we usually plan our growth and replacement cycle during the budgetting process. In short we can provide you with a VM, but I would want to see incredibly strong data to back up the 20Mb requirement. As we will need to pass this up the chain to our colo, and they their provider.

Re: A server for Openmeetings Re: OpenMeetings status (Was: [Incubator Wiki] Update of "March2012" by SebastianWagner)

@sebastian sure 20 Mbit/s server that cannot replace openmeetings.de
@tony I suspected that bandwidth can be a problem, I recall how Apache
Harmony guys were banned due to frequent svn checkouts

I recall Apache owned several donated servers at different places, and
the server don't need to be close to the whole Apache infra. Could one
of these servers be used, or these remote donated servers are no
longer available?

Alexei, we dont have that amount of bandwidth to throw this. Our main US circuit is only 50Mb. This has to provide all our other services too, such as svn, mail, www, mail-archives etc.
Right now we are pushinvg that circuit at over 100Mb during peak periods. Adding another 20Mb is likely to upset folks at OSU.

Other resources you request should be do-able without a great deal of strain. It's just the bandwidth requirements that make this look very unattractive.

Hi Alexei,

such a server will hardly be possible to replace the current Demo Server.
There are around 50.000 user profiles on that server hosted. Avverage there
are 20-30 people online, sometimes lot more. And there are around 20.000
conference rooms on it.

I've not seen the Apache Board request such a service - quite the
opposite in fact, there are reasons why a dial in conference is better
for such meetings, this was discussed recently when someone suggested
using Skype or equivalent.
