Found Chris R.
I received an email from the designer of the logo with the highest
score. He is Chris Rottensteiner from South Tyrol. I've added his
information to the blog post here:

I also invited him to read the feedback from the survey and submit a
revised logo. I also sent him information on this marketing mailing
list.

The best way to test it is to zoom out and put it in the middle of a news
paragraph see if you can see "ffi" with the dot and its not awkwardly white
spaced.

Hi
I have done the ff ligature manually as Inkscape AFAIK does not support
OTF-ligatures. I don't like the i point merged into the f (see Gill Sans

http://layersmagazine.com/the-art-of-type-ligatures-fusion-power.html).
@Dave: Could you make an example how ffi should look like?

The font is Source Sans Pro, made open source by Adobe last year. If
I'm reading the specs correctly it has ligatures for two letter combos
like ff, fi and fl, but nothing special for three-letter combos.
