XWPF - How to copy bitmaps between documents?

I'm taking a template document and copying it, then doing search and replace
on certain text keywords. That's all working fine. But I've spent days
trying to work out how to copy bitmaps from the original document. Tried
loads of approaches. I also have trouble creating new bitmaps in a blank
document. A google of the problem reveals it's a common issue.

What is the recommended way of copying bitmaps between documents?

All help appreciated greatly :-)
