[jira] Created: (INFRA-891) Mails sent to docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org do not show up on bugs@httpd.apache.org, although bugs@httpd.apache.org is subscribed.

Mails sent to docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org do not show up on bugs@httpd.apache.org, although bugs@httpd.apache.org is subscribed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: INFRA-891
                 URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-891
             Project: Infrastructure
          Issue Type: Bug
      Security Level: public (Regular issues)
          Components: Mailing Lists
            Reporter: Ruediger Pluem

Although bugs@httpd.apache.org is subscribed to docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org, mails sent to docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org do not show up on bugs@httpd.apache.org. Is it possible that bugs@httpd.apache.org does not accept mails from unsubcribed mail addresses / that bugs@httpd.apache.org is moderated?

We cannot subscribe docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org to bugs@httpd.apache.org for obvious reasons. How can we make bugs@httpd.apache.org accept mails from docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org?

Thanks and regards

Rüdiger

---------------------------------------

Subscribing one list to another is not recommended. Redirecting mail to multiple lists
can be added within the .qmail file (see the security lists for an example), but that will
break every time someone runs ezmlm-make on the list. It would be better to add a header
field to the message sent by bugzilla that could be used to filter received mail.

bugs@httpd.apache.org is already subscribed to docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org. Ok I understand that this is not recommended. Then we should revert this subscription. Can we please try the .qmail approach instead, despite its problems?

I don't know if you followed the discussion about this new list on docs@. The purpose had been to get more docs people involved in solving documentation bugs. Many of them do not subscribe to bugs@ because of the volume of this list.
The original approach was to sent documentation bugs ONLY to docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org, but Joshua opposed this approach. So I was trying to find a solution that fits both needs.

While a filter sounds nice I think it is a better solution to avoid getting unwanted mails at all. The next question to me: Is bugzilla capable of adding such a header?

BTW: Thanks for giving comments even while you are on vacation.

Rüdiger

But these mails are not sent by bugzilla@apache.org but by docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org. Let me draw the workflow for the final solution:

1. Someone creates a bugziilla bug for httpd with component Documentation.
2. Bugzilla sents a mail to docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org.
3. As bugs@httpd.apache.org is subscribed to docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org, bugs@httpd.apache.org also receives this mail, but this time the sender is not bugzilla@apache.org, but docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org. So bugs@httpd.apache.org should also accept mails from docs-bugs@httpd.apache.org.

Ok, I do not have any statistics for bugs@. I actually have some people willing to subscribe to docs-bugs@ and in discussions in Dublin they agreed that this is a good idea. Sending a docs-specifc search summary does not help as this is not close enough to the creation of the bugs. I discussed this with Rich in Dublin and I agree. Documentation bug reporters often get diverted too fast.
Anyway I do not think that it makes sense that we both discuss this here. So I will go back to docs@ with this discussion and provide a link to this report here (if you have no objections). After the discussion on docs@ we can see how to continue and whether we simply close this report or if some further actions are required.

Are you sure it fits the needs? Do you actually have a list of people willing to subscribe to docs-bugs?

I don't understand the need because most httpd developers don't subscribe to bugs either.
Bugzilla's email interface is hideous -- I just use the GUI. Wouldn't it be easier to send a
docs-specific search summary (with links) to the docs list, say once a week or so?
