Chris,

This list is open to the public but it isn't a forum for free speech on any
topic, it's a forum for discussing Struts issues, and I expect some people
(myself included) view non-Struts based email in a similar light to spam.
I'm sure the moderators wouldn't leave people who post about selling ipods
and viagra on the list and just ignore them, and I am advocating we take a
similar line with consistent off topic posters (maybe with a warning after
the first two or three consecutive OT posts).

I'm also not entirely sure of your view because your email appears to
contradict itself. You start off by saying I should ignore what I don't
like, then you sound like you're trying to tell me to respect your view of
what's "inappropriate content" when posting to the list.

I understand that I may get a bad reputation from my posts, but I very much
doubt the whole of the Struts project will be labelled as unpleasant just
for removing people who don't stick to the rules of the list (see the the
section titled "Join the lists that are appropriate for your discussion."
under guidelines at http://struts.apache.org/mail.html)

If you don't like what I'm saying please feel free to ignore it, but in the
same light, if you respond to my posts with a viewpoint I don't agree with,
don't be surprised if I put my point of view forward in a way which may not
meet your personal appropriate content standards.

Al.

That's why I'm suggesting that you ignore them.

Stifling a voice because you don't like what it's saying is no good.
That's a far worse snowball than OT posts. I'm sure the moderators would
agree.

This is a public forum. Kindly direct inappropriate content to the right
place (or at least away from here). We certainly don't want to get the
reputation of being a bunch of jerks. If we do, then Struts will get a bad
name as having a belligerent community and people will stop using it.

I'm just a bit worried about a snowball effect where people start seeing OT
posts as acceptable and the number slowly grow as more people make them to
the stage where the signal to noise ration becomes painful because, as we've
seen, the original posters rarely start with OT in their subject.

As for democracy, what's that then?, and has it ever applied to mailing
lists? :).

Al,

Just ignore OT posts if they get on your nerves. They will eventually go
away. As much as I'd love to see some folks disappear from certain lists,
it's not very democratic. :(

Is someone going to drop this guy form the mailing list. I don't know
about others but I'd prefer the list to stick to Struts related issues
and not start becoming a help center for any java queries.

1) http://www.openldap.org/ is one solution (it's the
one I've usually used, anyway, unless something else
was already in place).

2) AFAIK from Java 1.3+ the javax.naming libs are
included in the Java runtime and (IIRC) already
includes LDAP providers:

http://java.sun.com/products/jndi/tutorial/basics/prepare/package.html

3) Not sure about providerutil.jar; I don't think I've
ever used it. Someone else will probably know, though.

Again, please try to mark "off-topic" messages with an
[OT] in the subject line. It's not that people won't
answer your off-topic posts, it's just a polite
notification in case people are filtering on the
off-topic string.
