FOSDEM 2018: Open Document Editors DevRoom

The Call for talks for the Open Document Editors (such as OpenOffice) is
open. I'll republish the full call on the OpenOffice blog later today to
have a reference URL.

Important dates:
- Submission deadline: 4 Dec 2017
- FOSDEM: 4 Feb 2018, Brussels, Belgium.

I encourage everybody who plans to be there to submit a talk. Please
give it a technical angle since FOSDEM is a quite technical conference
(details below). But all of us have something to say, even if it is just
a mini-presentation.

Remember that we have funding available for events, and we should really
spend it. More detailed information will come.

The devroom is not the place for an OpenOffice-specific gathering, but
FOSDEM is (meaning: we can, and we surely will, organize a meeting, but
not in the devroom). But Peter already started a discussion about the
gathering and I'll post there.

Full text of the call below.

Regards,
   Andrea.

   ------------------------

FOSDEM is one of the largest gatherings of Free Software contributors in
the world and happens each year in Brussels (Belgium) at the ULB Campus
Solbosch. In 2018, it will be held on Saturday, February 3, and Sunday,
February 4.

As usual, the Open Document Editors DevRoom will be jointly organized by
Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice, on Saturday, February 3 (from 10:30AM
to 6:30PM, room AW1.120). The shared devroom gives every project in this
area a chance to present ODF related developments and innovations.

We are now inviting proposals for talks about Open Document Editors or
the ODF standard document format, on topics such as code, localization,
QA, UX, extensions, tools and adoption related cases. This is a unique
opportunity to show new ideas and developments to a wide technical
audience. Please do keep in mind, though, that product pitches are not
allowed at FOSDEM.

Length of talks should be limited to a maximum of 30 minutes, as we
would like to have questions after each presentation, and to fit as many
presenters as possible in the schedule. Exceptions must be explicitly
requested and justified. You may be assigned LESS time than you request.

All submissions have to be made in the Pentabarf event planning tool:
https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM18.

While filing your proposal, please provide the title of your talk, a
short abstract (one or two paragraphs), some information about yourself
(name, bio and photo, but please do remember that your profile might be
already stored at Pentabarf).

To submit your talk, click on “Create Event”, then make sure to select
the “Open Document Editors” devroom as the “Track”. Otherwise, your talk
will not be even considered for any devroom at all.

If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous year, even if
your talk was not accepted, please reuse it. Create an account if, and
only if, you don’t have one from a previous year. If you have any issues
with Pentabarf, please contact ode-devroom-manager@fosdem.org.

The deadline is Monday, December 4th, 2017. Accepted speakers will be
notified by Monday, December 11th, 2017. The schedule will be published
before Friday, December 15, 2017.

Recording Permission

The talks in the Open Document Editors DevRoom will be audio and video
recorded, and possibly streamed live too.

In the “Submission notes” field, please indicate that you agree to have
your presentation recorded and published under the same license as all
FOSDEM content (CC-BY). For example: “If my speech is accepted for
FOSDEM, I hereby agree to be recorded and to have recordings - including
slides and other presentation related documents - published under the
Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) 4.0 International License.
Sincerely, Name”.

Re: FOSDEM 2018: Open Document Editors DevRoom

Posted by Peter kovacs <pe...@apache.org>.
I would like to have at least one devroom talk. I have 2 Ideas.
1) introducing new Damjans Connector.
As I understand it, damjan will not be on FOSDEM. I would like to present the new interface and the architectural changes. Maybe also highlight some issues Damjan had.
It would be cool if I get some review help from Damjan for that.
2) Our Mac building issue.
I would like to present the wired behaviour we had with the Mac builds. However for that I need to isolate the issue somehow.
And make some presentation on the differences of Mac builds.

For the 2nd idea I need some help, since I am not really sure if I am able to isolate the case.

I am open for additional ideas.

All the best
Peter

Note: we have received reports that the FOSDEM site is unreachable for
many users today. We've thus decided to extend the deadline for an extra
48 hours. This means we will accept submissions that come until
Wednesday night, European time. The website problem is confirmed but
intermittent, so if you retry now you may be able to submit a proposal.
Regards,
   Andrea.

Just to avoid confusion about dates: FOSDEM is 3-4 February 2018 and
runs for the full day both days. The Open Document Editors (including
OpenOffice) devroom is on Saturday 3 February, full day. So if you can
stay only one day, make sure it is Saturday 3 February.

There will be an ASF booth running both days, and there will be many
other devrooms covering dozens of projects, so if you manage to be there
for both days, even better!

Regards,
   Andrea.
