What to call Apache Geode's command-line shell tool...
This came up in last night's PJUG meeting (** Unleashing the Silicon Forest
Fire: the open sourcing of GemFire **) here in PDX.
In Pivotal GemFire, the tool is called Gfsh (pronounced "G-fish", meaning
GemFire Shell).
Perhaps, we can call the Apache Geode "Shell" tool... "GOSH".
I would say "geosh", but that is 5 letters and sounds related to geography,
compared to "gfsh" being 4 letters, therefore... "gosh"!

What about GISH (GemFire/Geode interactive shell)?

+1 for gsh (Geode Shell)
Existing users and customers of GemFire could create a link/alias or maybe Pivotal can do it as part of packaging the product so nobody has to change anything in the current setup.

The alternative would be gsh (/gee-shell/)... Which really starts
playing in the realm of /i-*/.... and it brings up childhood memories of
/' Gee mister... you are really tall/ '
So I'd vote for /gfsh/ but at the same time... we might need something
that both incorporates Geode and GemFire..
So maybe 'g-shell' (taking a page from Springs book) would be the better
option. Especially if we are bundling it with Geode. Then inside the
shell it could be just 'gsh:>'

How about providing a symlink such that we essentially provide paths for
both 'gfsh' and 'geode' to make script transition easier.
I'd agree with Edin on his point #2. I don't think a banner of:

Well, concerning #4, there will be differences in the command-line
interface (as perceived by users), particularly for the Gateway/WAN

+1 keep gfsh for both.
My reasons:
1. There is no legal requirement (or any other for that matter) to change the name
2. The argument for distinguishing between a geode and gemfire installation is weak. Some of us have and switch between multiple installations of GemFire all the time. There are very simple shell environment based mechanisms to deal with this.
3. Impact on existing customers should be seriously considered
4. Last but not least, the artifact itself is not going to be any different between geode and gemfire. Choosing to call it differently in gemfire might imply that there is something different about it, when, in fact, there isn’t.

It seems that the general consensus is around geode as a name
for the shell. I see that William has filed GEODE-36 (thanks!).
Thanks to everybody for chiming with their take on the issue!
Thanks,
Roman.

- Managing gfsh vs. gsh in existing scripts is error prone. (think
about troubleshooting classpath for gfsh vs gsh)
- We have 50+ developers with gfsh on a PC classpath. We don't want to
teach them gsh vs. gfsh

Re: [rtds-dev] What to call Apache Geode's command-line shell tool...
Posted by Wes Williams <ww...@pivotal.io>.
The problem with leaving it as "gfsh" is that you already have a "gfsh"
symbol link that points to a _gemfire_ installation. If you name the geode
shell distribution as "gfsh", then when you need to switch from geode to
gemfire you will have to have a mechanism to overwrite or update the
_gemfire_ shell "gfsh" with the _geode_ shell "gfsh". Then when you go
back to geode you will need a reverse mechanism to update the _geode_ shell
"gfsh" with the _gemfire_ shell "gfsh". This is what I face daily and why
I named it something other than "gfsh", which installs in the bin directory.
I just want everyone to understand the ramifications of keeping it the same
name for those of us who use both.

I think gosh stands for Geode functional shell. Or some other friendly
word. We're going to drive our existing customers crazy with all this
package changing and script changing. Citigroup has 53 Gem fire apps
comprising many thousands of lines of code. We're trying to force them to
change all of that. Bad idea.

Re: What to call Apache Geode's command-line shell tool...
Posted by Wes Williams <ww...@pivotal.io>.
I run _both_ gemfire and geode on my laptop and I found this gfsh conflict
early on. I created a symbolic link named "geode" and pointed it to the
geode gfsh binary. I then just say "geode start locator ...", etc.
I thought of other alternatives but "gesh" wasn't doing it and so I just
left it "geode".
My vote is to just call it by the product name, geode.
