Bob, did you get anything from Gabriele?  We need at least one of the sample 
mails to debug this. 
 
I actually never heard of "ascii-format-PDF"s.  The MIME type for PDF files 
defines them as binary files (application/*), whatever they may look like 
internally. 
 
This might be an incarnation of bug 4289 though.
