Building a plugin with --release 8

For a plugin I support, I tried adding "--release 8" in

    module-proj > properties > Build > Compiling > AdditionalCompilerOptions

but got this

error: option --boot-class-path cannot be used together with --release
error: option --source cannot be used together with --release
error: option --target cannot be used together with --release
error: release version 8 not supported
    Usage: javac <options> <source files>

is it possible to build a module with "--release 8"?

Unless Maven has changed there(?), that doesn't compile on JDK 8 - you
need to put it in a profile only enabled by JDK 9+.

You probably want to update the Ant build for this instead - eg.
https://ant.apache.org/manual/Tasks/javac.html release property
ignored where not supported, and vice-versa. Have done this once for
an RCP project, but offhand can't remember where I did so.

Best wishes,

Neil

Still Ant. (old plugin, not updated)

Recent maven-compiler-plugin allows "<release>8</release>"

Maven or Ant? Not tried with plugins, but in general Maven requires
JDK specific settings, whereas Ant allows to specify release and will
do the right thing from recollection - been a while since I fought
with this one.
