I have found the problem, I had ls aliased to 'ls -lA|more'.
Funny thing is that its aliased on the other boxes that worked before, but
removing the alias gets everything to work.

Great!
I could not see where this result could come from a 'normal'
environment. I would look at paths/software versions (shell, ls, more)
for a possible explanation for the differences you see.
