I confirm that it's reproducible with this configuration. 

Steps:

1. Create a new document in Word
2. Add a canvas Insert -> Shapes -> Add drawing canvas
3. Add a shape, for example a rectangle
4. Save the document with docx format
5. Open the document with Writer -> the shape is not attached

Save the document in odt format
1. Repeat steps 1,2,3
2. Save the document with odt format
3. Open the document with Writer -> the shape is displayed
