RE: custom JDBCRealm

bill,
i have tried placing my source in common/classes, common/lib, shared/lib and shared/classes with no luck. depending on where i put my class, it was either in a Jar as part of a package, or just a stand-alone class.

i am really baffled here, it seems like one of those solutions should have worked. yet, i continue to get the NoClassDefFound error for the catalina class i am overriding (FormAuthenticator).

i know i am a newbie to tomcat, so perhaps i am missing something simple. if anyone has had any luck overriding any of the catalina classes in their webapp and has had some success actually running it, please lend a hand!

thanks!

Re: custom JDBCRealm

Posted by James Carman <ja...@carmanconsulting.com>.
You don't need to implement a custom realm for this. You can use a servlet
filter. The userid of the currently logged in user can be accessed via
request.getUserPrincipal().getName(). You can use this information to
lookup the other user data in the database and place it in the session (if
it doesn't already exist).

Hi Andrew,
Sorry to email u directlt on this, but I was wondering if you managed to
find a solution to your problem. I have just encountered the same thing
and think it has something to do with errors in my web.xml file.
Ive just posted a message to tomcat-user and "fingers crossed".
Would appreciate it if you had any advice.

Regards & Thanks

Marking servlet org.apache.catalina.INVOKER.ImageRender as unavailable

Posted by Andrew Leeb <le...@mekons.com>.
Hi all

I'm having some difficulty understanding why I'm getting this error in
the logs:

StandardWrapper[:org.apache.catalina.INVOKER.ImageRender]: Marking
servlet org.apache.catalina.INVOKER.ImageRender as unavailable
2003-04-06 16:45:00 invoker: Cannot allocate servlet instance for path
/servlet/ImageRender
javax.servlet.ServletException: Wrapper cannot find servlet class
ImageRender or a class it depends on

Problem in brief: Servlet works when called directly i.e. in a URL, but
not when called from a JSP page.

Overview of the system: a very simple photo album. Images are stored as
binary data in a database. A serlvet, ImageRender, gets the binary data
from the database. A JSP page calls the servlet, ImageRender, from
within an img src tag. If I call the servlet directly, the image
displays. However, when I call it from the JSP page, it will not
display.

Calling ImageRender from the JSP page worked yesterday, then stopped
working today.

I have searched archives concerning this and not found anything helpful.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-andy

In theory, common/{classes, lib} should work, but I've never tried it.
shared/{classes, lib} won't work, and WEB-INF/{classes, lib} should fail as
well.

Actually, re-reading closer, you have to put your class in server/{classes,
lib}. Otherwise the classloader won't be able to find the
"FormAuthenticator" base class. My custom Authenticator (installed in
server/lib) is working like a charm :-).

Re: custom JDBCRealm

www.securityfilter.org

OK: And I may be way of base: I just checked the source forge cvs,
haven't downloaded or installed anything, so my 2c is probably not worth
much, but ...

To me it seems that they wrote their own extension to catalina,

package org.securityfilter.realm.catalina;
<snip>
public class CatalinaRealmAdapter implements SecurityRealmInterface {
<snip>

So, in my own private way of thinking, I would assume that you are not
actually extending any of the base Tomcat classes, but one of their
classes. This would lead me to believe that you need to publish the
security filter classes as part of your web application to be able to
successfully a. use them, b. customise the realm.

So: question: Have you tried added the securityfilter classes to
$CATALINA_HOME/webapps/YourWebApp/WEB-INF/classes
or
$CATALINA_HOME/common/lib
depending on what format they are?

But, like I said: I haven't installed it, nor do I understand it, it's
just my 2c.

Re: custom JDBCRealm

Posted by Carl Maib <ca...@mfells.com>.
the problem is not tomcat recognizing my class, it is tomcat recognizing one
of its own classes called out from my web application.

i have tried various things to put catalina.jar in common/lib or shared/lib
with no success. besides, this doesn't seem right anyway. but, when it is
late and you get desparate, you'll try anything!
