[users@httpd] Persistence connection feature.
Hello Team,
This is regarding Apache 2.0 persistence connection feature.
(1) In the case of 1.3.x when we have KeepAlive on it is said that the connection can be reused for more than one request(persistence). According to some documents Apache 2.0 by default supports persistence.
(a) Does that mean we do not need to enable KeepAlive On in Apache 2.0?
(b) If the connection browser supports only HTTP/1.0 what will happen?
(2) Could someone please give me a testing method to check whetther persistence is being used or not in Apache 2.0 and Apache 1.3.x?
Thanks and Regards,
Manoj

: The Apache org site (the one you referred) says like "The Keep-Alive
: extension to HTTP/1.0 and the persistent connection feature of
: HTTP/1.1 .....". This to me means like the Keep-Alive is applicable
: for HTTP/1.0 connections.
Correct. The feature is an optional extension to HTTP/1.0 that was
available with some clients.
: Are you saying "if the client is HTTP/1.1 and KeepAlive is set off,
: the connection will not be reused"?
Correct.

Hello Eugene,
Thanks for your reply!
The Apache org site (the one you referred) says like "The Keep-Alive extension to HTTP/1.0 and the persistent connection feature of HTTP/1.1 .....". This to me means like the Keep-Alive is applicable for HTTP/1.0 connections.
Are you saying "if the client is HTTP/1.1 and KeepAlive is set off, the connection will not be reused"?

Actually, KeepAlive has been around since Apache 1.1 and is enabled by
default for HTTP/1.1 clients.
: (a) Does that mean we do not need to enable KeepAlive On in Apache 2.0?
If it's commented out of httpd.conf, it will default to be "on". If it
is not commented out and is set to "off", doing so will turn off the
feature for all clients and is not recommended.
: (b) If the connection browser supports only HTTP/1.0 what will happen?
RTFM:
For HTTP/1.0 clients, Keep-Alive connections will only be
used if they are specifically requested by a client.
