Apache Web Server with IBM WebSphere - how does it work?

Can anyone tell me, or point me to documentation, that describes how
(when you use the Apache HTTP Server with IBM WebSphere) servlet requests
get passed from the Apache Web Server to IBM WebSphere's servlet
container?  How does Apache know which requests to forward to WebSphere?
What is the protocol that Apache uses to talk to WebSphere?
