Join/Merge of mailing-list + newsgroup alt.apache.configuration

Why are existing two different public discussion forums:
This Mailing-List and the newsgroup
alt.apache.configuration.

Wouldn't it make sense to merge these two
discussion forums ?

Hey, it's five now.

Newsgroups and mailing lists are different in nature. People then have
their own preferences.

And we might need to tell people on comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix as
well.

You're absolutely right. Just tell everyone on alt.apache.configuration
(and the Yahoo apache list) to use this one. This is the *official*
apache list, supported by the ASF. Which would you prefer to get advice
from?

Not really. I don't know where the newsgroup started, but it doesn't
appear to be propagated to any of the news servers *I* use. The
mailing list, aside from being hosted by the Apache Software
Foundation, archived, and moderated, is also available to anyone
without regard to their network location or server accessibility.

alt.apache.configuration is, as far as I know, a bastard newsgroup that was
never officially created and does not get carried by many news servers. It
should not be used for anything. There has always been an "officially
sanctioned" apache newsgroup: comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix. That is
the place that has been referenced in the apache FAQ, and is the place where
you can occasionally see apache developers.

As far as whether both a newsgroup and a mailing group should coexist, my
opinion is that they should. Some people prefer newsgroups and some prefer
mailing lists. I think this mailing list will become the "official" place,
but we don't want to discourage people from forming other places to discuss
apache.

Joshua.
