fyi: if you don't include -O1, -O2, or -O3, you won't get warnings about
uninitialized variables.

it is possible to use -O / -O2 w/ -g and do debugging ... but it's true
that it can interfere in some ways. (this is the set of flags with which
i've done debugging, but i can see being annoyed by the problems it
introduces.)
