Author: danj
Date: Sat Sep  9 11:02:21 2006
New Revision: 441835

URL: http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?view=rev&rev=441835
Log:
1. Added docs/index.html that lists docs by version.

2. Added reference manual TOC with separate pages for each.

3. Added capability docs, but only one has the Muse web site HTML around it. However, every other capability HTML
page has only its body content, so I can just copy over the HTML head/script/body start to the top and the HTML
body end into each file, fix the heading, and we'll be good to go.

Added:

<p>
<b>Description:</b> This capability implements the WS-N publish-subscribe system
so that resources can notify listeners as to events that have occurred. Through
the Subscribe operation, clients can register to receive notifications about a
subset (or all) of the events that happen to the resource. Subscribing to these
notifications results in the creation of a Subscription WS-resource, the lifetime
of which can be controlled by the requesting client. These subscriptions are managed
by Muse's resource manager but are referenced by this capability in order to send
out notifications to the right listeners at the right time.
</p>
<p>
One cannot add this capability without also deploying the SubscriptionManager
resource type. More details are provided in <em>Behavior and Limitations</em>.

<p>
<b>Behavior and Limitations:</b> Calls to subscribe() result in the creation of a subscription resource; in the
default implementation, these subscriptions are persisted as XML files on disk and will be reloaded if the
application's container reboots. The type representing subscriptions is any resource type deployed in muse.xml
that has the <a href="wsn-sub.html">SubscriptionManager</a> capability. If no such resource type is
deployed, the capability will fail to initialize, because the type is necessary in order to represent subscriptions
in a standards-compliant way.
<br><br>
This capability provides a publish() method that allows users to send payload content to subscribers without
knowing anything about the internal subscription management data structures, how many subscribers there are, etc.
Users provide an optional topic and the payload (content for wsnt:Message), and the capability will handle the
packaging of the notification and pushing it out to the consumers. Messages without a topic will be published to
subscribers whose subscription filter matches the message's XML content.
<br><br>
The default implementation of WSN NotificationProducer includes all three standard filter types. Use of the
message pattern filter may hurt performance, as it requires an XPath evaluation on each message that is published.
The resource property filters will vary in performance depending on how many properties are being checked at the
time of the notification; these filters inherently involve dynamic (mutable) properties, so a cache of equality
test results is not likely to help. Topic filters provide the best performance because they only require a simple
equality check against the filter's topic name and the message's topic name; the trade-off with topic filters is
that they require more work at design time.
</p>
<p>
<b>Initialization parameters:</b>
<ul>
<li><b>topic-set</b> - The relative path of an XML file containing the topic set that the resource type should publish. It does

</p>
<p>
<b>Capability URI:</b> http://docs.oasis-open.org/wsn/bw-2/PullPoint
</p>
<p>
<b>Description:</b> This capability exposes WS-N pullpoint resources, which act
as temporary storage for notifications until clients retrieve them. This type of
notification is different from publish-subscribe because clients will get the
resource's messages by polling (or some other trigger) rather than expecting to
receive the notification as soon as it occurs. Pullpoints work by acting as a
semi-broker - they subscribe to notifications so clients don't have to, and then
they store the notifications they receive until the clients ask for them.
</p>

that keeps an in-memory collection of the notifications with an adjustable maximum size; most
users will want to replace this component with one that stores the notifications in a more
performant way. The current PullPointDataStore also deletes notifications once they have
been read with the GetMessages operation - this is neither required or prohibited, as the
spec is vague on what should happen after a notification has been retrieved by one client.

<b>Description:</b> This capability represents WSN subscription resources that

This capability provides a publish() method that allows users to send notifications (NotificationMessage objects)
to the subscription's consumer. If multiple notification messages are published at once and one of them fails
to reach the consumer, a warning message is logged and the next message is considered. The subscription's filter is
used to determine if the message should be sent.

<p>
<b>Description:</b> Muse defines an abstract base class that provides a simple
feature in addition to those offered by the core Capability and AbstractCapability
types. AbstractWsResourceCapability ensures that any resource class that is using
the concrete capability is of type WsResource, and thus has a ResourcePropertyCollection.
Based on this knowledge, the abstract class tries to discover and validate the
resource properties defined by the concrete capability during its initialization.

There must at least be a getter; setters are only needed if the property is
writeable.
<br><br>
Assuming the appropriate getter and setter are available, the class then
registers the capability with the resource's ResourcePropertyCollection; this
action will result in the ResourcePropertyCollection delegating all WSRP
operations for the capability's properties to the its get/set methods.

The getter and setter methods for the resource
properties must be of the form <b>get{LocalName}</b> and <b>set{LocalName}</b>,
where <b>{LocalName}</b> is the local name of the property's QName. Assuming
each capability defines its properties in its own schema namespace, there
should be no name clashes with other capabilities' properties and methods.
<br><br>
The <b>{LocalName}</b> portion of the method must be the exact local name,
even if the property has a cardinality greater than zero; in other words, if
a property can have multiple values, its getter and setter name cannot use the
plural form of the name. For example, if a capability defines a property
{http://ws.apache.org/muse/test/example}Foo, the getter and setter for the
property must be named getFoo() and setFoo() even if Foo is [0..n]. The
names getFoos() or setFoos() will result in an initialization error.
<br><br>
Properties with a cardinality greater than one should be represented in their
getters and setters with arrays. Users may use whatever they like to store the
values internally (Java Collections Framework, persistent data store, etc.),
but the values must come in and out as arrays.
<br><br>
When the class encounters a property that has a cardinality of [0..1] and
is also nillable, the getProperty(QName) method will return an empty Element
(null value) to the ResourcePropertyCollection if the value of the property
is null. This is not 100% correct because the property could have no value,
so returning one value (null) would be wrong. In general, it is best to
avoid this ambiguity when defining your property schemas. However, if you
must have such ambiguity, and the default behavior is not what you want,
you can change the behavior by overriding the getProperty(QName) method and
taking special action for the property in question; just remember to call
super.getProperty(QName) to deal with the other properties in the capability!

</p>
<p>
<b>Capability URI:</b> http://docs.oasis-open.org/wsrf/sgw-2/ServiceGroup
</p>
<p>
<b>Description:</b> This capability allows users to create service groups whose
entries represent local or remote resources (that is, resources that are created
in the same application space or in other applications). Each entry in the
service group is represented as a WS-resource.
</p>
<p>
<b>Java interface:</b>
<a href="muse-wsrf-api/src/org/apache/muse/ws/resource/sg/ServiceGroup.java?view=markup">org.apache.muse.ws.resource.sg.ServiceGroup</a>
<blockquote>
<b>JAR file:</b> muse-wsrf-api.jar
</blockquote>
</p>
<p>
<b>Default Java implementation:</b> org.apache.muse.ws.resource.sg.impl.SimpleServiceGroup
<blockquote>
<b>JAR file:</b> muse-wsrf-impl.jar
</blockquote>
</p>
<p>
<b>Action on initialize():</b> The implementation checks to make sure that a
resource with the WSSG ServiceGroupEntry capability has been deployed in the
same application so that it can create ServiceGroupEntry resources for each of
its entries. If no such resource type is deployed, initialization will fail.
<br><br>
The capability also registers itself as a listener on the ResourceManager so
that it can create (and destroy) the appropriate ServiceGroupEntry resources
each time other resource types are instantiated (or destroyed). This allows
users to collect resource types in service groups without writing code to do
so explicitly.
</p>
<p>
<b>Action on initializeCompleted():</b> None.
</p>
<p>
<b>Action on prepareShutdown():</b> None.
</p>
<p>
<b>Action on shutdown():</b> All of the ServiceGroup's ServiceGroupEntry
resources are shutdown.
</p>
<p>
<b>Non-Core Dependencies:</b>
<ul>
<li><a href="wsrf-wsrl-scheduled.html">http://docs.oasis-open.org/wsrf/rlw-2/ScheduledTermination</a></li><br>
<li><a href="wsrf-wssg-sge.html">http://docs.oasis-open.org/wsrf/sgw-2/ServiceGroupEntry</a></li>
</ul>
<p>
<b>Behavior and Limitations:</b> This implementation of WSSG ServiceGroup is
somewhat unique in that it does not use the static wsrf-sg:Content data provided
during the creation of a ServiceGroupEntry resource. Instead, the implementation
uses the EPR of the potential member service to create a client for the service
and read the property values listed in the group's wsrf-sg:MembershipContentRule
property. If the service's current properties document has the required properties,
the service will become a member of the group; the wsrf-sg:Content element is
ignored, since it may be inaccurate or simply wrong.
<br><br>
The ServiceGroup implementation is a ResourceManagerListener. For every notification
it receives of a newly-added resource, a new ServiceGroupEntry resource is created
to represent it. The only exceptions are for the ServiceGroup resource itself and
the ServiceGroupEntry resources (creating entries for entries would result in an
infinite recursion). Similarly, resources are removed from the group when a
notification is received that the ResourceManager has removed them.
<br><br>
While this capability allows internal (service-side) code to add entries to the
service group manually, it does not expose the WSSG Add operation to remote
clients. This is done by adding in the
<a href="wsrf-wssg-sgr.html">ServiceGroupRegistration</a> capability.
</p>
<p>
<b>Initialization parameters:</b> None.

</p>
<p>
<b>Capability URI:</b> http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2004/09/mex
</p>
<p>
<b>Description:</b> This capability implements the GetMetadata operation
defined by the WS-MetadataExchange specification. Clients can provide a
dialect (URI) representing a certain type of metadata, and the capability
will return an XML document(s) describing that metadata. The spec defines
a standard dialect for requesting and receiving WSDL documents.
</p>
<p>
<b>Java interface:</b>
<a href="muse-wsx-api/src/org/apache/muse/ws/metadata/MetadataExchange.java?view=markup">org.apache.muse.ws.metadata.MetadataExchange</a>

<p>
<b>Action on shutdown():</b> None.
</p>
<p>
<b>Non-Core Dependencies:</b> None.
<p>
<b>Behavior and Limitations:</b>
The WSDL dialect defined by the spec is implemented such that GetMetadata
requests that use the WSDL dialect will receive the entire WSDL document,
including all imported schemas and WSDLs. No additional metadata dialects
are defined or implemented.
<br><br>
The implementation reads and constructs the WSDL document for every
GetMetadata request in order to avoid having the WSDL document in
memory at all times. This might be a significant burden given that
many "real world" resource types will import a number of other WSDL
and XSD files, creating a very large in-memory structure.
<br><br>
The spec does not define any fault types or undesirable behavior, so the
implementation (which is spec-compliant) does not differentiate
between invalid dialects and valid dialects that simply have no metadata
documents to return.
