Changing kernel/runtime/samples to new apis

I have updated kernel to use the new spec apis but also need to make  
changes to the runtime code (the host code) and the samples. I can  
either check in what I have so far which will break the runtime  
module in the trunk, or I can press on until everything is converted  
(which will be a much bigger patch to assimilate).

In the interests of little&often, unless anyone objects I'll apply  
the change to the kernel tomorrow morning PST and patch the build for  
runtime so that the unit tests pass but it won't actually run. I'll  
then make smaller changes to the runtime and core samples to reflect  
the changes. I'd expect to be able to run the basic core samples late  
tomorrow or early Sat.
