Commons Net 1.4.x Service Release?

Dear Commons Community,

For our Eclipse project DSDP-TM (for an URL, see
my signature below), we're picking up Commons Net
1.4.1 in order to provide remote FTP access. This
is being used in a number of places, including
transparent management of remote web servers.

We've recently come across a bug where the FTP
connection deadlocks, approximately once out
of 20 uploads:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=202758

We've been able to track this down to two known
bugs in Commons Net, which have been fixed about
a year ago:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NET-3
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NET-73

Without these fixes, our tool is pretty useless
for FTP, and we cannot see a workaround for the
issue. So we really really need the fixes! But
just picking up the patches is not easily possible
for us, due to IP cleanliness reasons we'd much
prefer a real service release of Commons Net.

Looking at the Release Notes embedded in the recent
nightlies (Commons Net 1.5-Snapshot), it looks like
an 1.4.x service release had been planned at some
point but never actually done.

Would it be possible to have a Commons Net 1.4.2
Service Release? Or what else are the release
plans for Commons Net?

Thanks a lot for any insight!

Cheers,

I for one would appreciate having a bug fix release, if version 2.0 goes
to 1.5+. If help is needed to do so, I'd be happy to help. If other
jakarta projects are in a similar situation, please chime in here.

We deploy code on IBM System i aka iSeries aka AS/400 and the version
common to our customers is version 1.4, so we basically stay there for
the foreseeable future.

Best regards,

RE: Commons Net 1.4.x Service Release?

Posted by "Oberhuber, Martin" <Ma...@windriver.com>.
Hello Jeffrey,

many thanks for offering help!
Are you a Commons Net committer?

For me it looks like there is two tasks for releasing
commons net 1.4.2:

(a) Look through JIRA to see if there are any more
fixes outstanding or worth backporting. I'm not
100% sure but it could be that there is still an
issue with the Telnet Stream leading to occasional
reliabiliaty problems with FTP. For reference, see
    https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=219792#c2
    https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NET-145

(b) Take the current commons net 1.4.x branch, make
sure that all Legal files are correct, automated
testing runs OK and make a release.

It would be awsome to get a truly reliable FTP client
from Commons Net 1.4.2 -- for us, having the patches
NET-3 and NET-73 was very important already, but
having our own patched version is not as good as
having an officially released version.

Thanks!

Re: Commons Net 1.4.x Service Release?

Hi Martin

Sorry for the late reply. It's been a busy year for me, and I am having
trouble allocating sufficient time to [net] at the moment to close off
the remaining issues and schedule a release, hence the delay. There seem
to be a trickle of bug reports, but unfortunately not much manpower
available to fix them. I was hoping to have a release out long before
now, but unfortunately this has not been the case. If I can find another
interested party to assist with a release, then we can potentially get a
1.4.x and 2.0 release out shortly.

Cheers
Rory

RE: Commons Net 1.4.x Service Release?

Posted by "Oberhuber, Martin" <Ma...@windriver.com>.
Hello Rory,

it's been some time since we've had contact regarding
a commons net 1.4.x service release.

In fact I have applied the patches mentioned below
that we needed to our own branch of commons net, and
deployed them with Eclipse. So yes, these patches are
tested and known to be good.

Eclipse is now going the next round of release train,
and I'd be interested to get these fixes into an
officially released version. It looks like others
need such a patch version too:

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NET-68?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=12559761#action_12559761 ]

Is there a chance to get a commons net 1.4.x release
any time soon?

Thanks,

RE: Commons Net 1.4.x Service Release?

Posted by "Oberhuber, Martin" <Ma...@windriver.com>.
Hello Rory,

thanks for the pointer. Looks like the biggest changes
in commons net 2.0 are
 - Require Java 1.5
 - Use java.util.regex instead of ORO
 - Use JDK SocketFactory
 - Use Maven2 for building
 - Support FTPS

These are interesting, but unfortunately we cannot require
Java 1.5 for our current release cycle. I also think that
even in the future, avoiding java.util.regex and Generics
will be interesting, because there are even modern embedded
JVMs which do not have these - but commons net FTP and
telnet may be interesting even on a small PDA or Java enabled
cell phone.

I'd thus appreciate if there could be a commons net
1.4.2 or 1.5 service release.

Thanks!

Hello Rory,

Thanks very much for offering help with a Commons Net 1.4.x release!
We've been in contact with the original submitter of these fixes,
and he's been using these successfully forr over a year now.

We've also applied the fixes to a local test version, and cannot
see the deadlock any more so we are confident that it fixes the
issue indeed.

Thanks,
Martin

Subject: Re: Commons Net 1.4.x Service Release?

Hi Martin (and anyone else who may have commented on this topic)

I have been working on and off (not so much recently due to lack of
time) on a release for commons-net. I was planning to make a 2.0 release
and not specifically release from the 1.4 branch, however, it looks like
this may now be necessary. I dont have a lot of time at the moment (in
fact I had planned an initial 2.0 release for a few months ago
initially).

It may be possible to do a 1.4.x release before 2.0 - this is probably
what you will want, as 2.0 will work on a 1.5+ JVM only. Before we look
at this however, are you sure that these bug fixes you list below fix
the errors you are seeing? Have you verified with a suitable source
build or nightly?

Cheers
Rory
