So what needs to happen to get the SSL reverse proxy configured? Do I need to have a local httpd configured and proxy to tomcat or can the SSL reverse proxy just hit the http tomcat endpoint? I am assuming that the SSL proxy will hit the VM across a separate, private network. Is this assumption invalid?

Note you have a non-secure URI resource preventing automatic full ssl display:

<script src="http://localhost:8080/gadgets/js/container:pubsub-2:open-views.js?c=1&amp;container=default&amp;debug=1"></script>

might want to make that resource relative.

Matt, what will be publicly exposed? Can you please quantify what you need 2G of RAM? While we have it, we dont like to throw it away.
What needs to be installed?
Who else needs access?
Who needs sudo access?

This VM will be managed by puppet, and as such access is controlled by root@ etc

If the app requires credentials for any action at all, we require SSL. This will mean that we will reverse proxy the HTTP(and S) connections from a host we control. The VM will have iptables running too, so we can manage open public ports.

Matt Franklin commented on INFRA-4786:
--------------------------------------

We would like to have 3 instances of Rave + Wookie + Shindig running, so essentially 3 tomcat instances with ~512MB allocated to each JVM. We will front each of the tomcat instances with httpd using mod_proxy_ajp.

The only thing we need installed out of the box is just the OS. We can handle the rest; though, if you want to setup the IPTables config, we wont' complain :)

It would be nice to have the Rave PMC given logon rights and sudo access.

I know of puppet, but haven't used it. Would we be interacting with it at all, or are you (INFRA) just using it to configure authentication, etc?

We will be doing authentication, but via application managed accounts in the Rave database.

sudo requires that you set up OTP , on these machines we use Orthrus. Run ortpasswd on the rave-vm and run a OTP client locally , then paste in the response key. This sets you up for sudo access. This OTP system you need to use each sudo session.
see apache.org/dev/freebsd-jails for more related info if required.

[jira] [Resolved] (INFRA-4786) Ubuntu VM for Rave

Posted by "Gavin (JIRA)" <ji...@apache.org>.

Gavin resolved INFRA-4786.
--------------------------

    Resolution: Fixed

All done.

https://rave-live.apache.org/portal/login

Steps needed to complete were:

1. Add httpd config to the reverse proxy host, mapping rave-live.a.o to its host rave-vm and with SSL
2. Update the puppet config of the rave host init.pp to allow port 80
3. Install Apache2 on the rave-vm, add a /etc/apache2/sites-available/rave-vm.a.o.conf file and configure to reverse proxy 80 -> 8080. Also enable mod_proxy_*
4. update DNS to add rave-live to point to proxy host.
5. miscelany updates

It might be an idea to add the /etc/apache2/sites-available/ to your svn (optional)

Enjoy

Tony Stevenson commented on INFRA-4786:
---------------------------------------

Ok,

If you are going to be asking anyone for any credentials we require that you use SSL for this. We will provide (and manage) the HTTPD front end that does this. We almost certainly wont use mod_ajp, but we will happily use mod_proxy_http for this. If you have any special requirements let us know, otherwise let us have the 3 URI paths and we will make that happen.

- What name would you like for this service? rave-demo.a.o ?
- Your access will be restricted to the VM for your services. You wont have access to the VM running HTTPD, as this is using a shared wildcard SSL certificate, and only root@ staff have access to this VM.
- If you provide us with a space separated list of usernames we can make sure they get shell access, and we will need a separate list for those who *need* sudo. Please dont just give it to everyone.
- These VMs will block all ports by default, and we will only allow external SSH access, and we will need to know the 3 ports that tomcat runs on so that we can allow access from the SSL proxy.
- Dont worry you will have no access to the puppet config so you have no need to worry.
- Please also note that the PMC will be entirely responsible for making sure that the VM remains upto date and patched. Removing packages installed by infra is not allowed, if you have a conflict please check with us first.
