Outreach Program for Women

Hello there,

I saw on the OPW page that you're looking for candidates for your project.
I'd love to get involved! I'm unsure where to get started, so I'm hoping
you can point me in the right direction. My background is in sysadmin
(networking, etc.) and webadmin (including LAMP) , but I'm retraining to be
a programmer. I know some PHP and a bit of C, C++,Python, and javascript.
I'm also good at writing documentation (if you'd like to see some of my
work, see http://g33kgrrl.wordpress.com). If you know of a microproject I
can do before the Dec 3 deadline, please let me know. Time is running
short, so I'll leave you my cell number in case you'd like to call or text.
Thank you for your help! :)

Lisa

P.S. - I was looking at Issue 2303 (
http://subversion.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=2303) as a possibility,
or at least doing part of it, but it may be too advanced for my current
programming skills. I learn very quickly, though, so if someone mentored me
through some of the needed tasks, I might be just fine on it. I'm willing
to try anything you think would be appropriate.

That'd be my doing -- renamed a bunch of files all named "main.c" to more
descriptive names yesterday.

FIXED the website page just now:

   Sending opw.html
   Transmitting file data .
   Committed revision 1415912.

Enjoy!

Hello all,

Please excuse my delay in replying. I found a mentor with OTI and started
a project right after contacting this list, and as time was running short,
I was wracking my brain on crunch time until the deadline. Then after my
application was properly submitted, I thought I might try some of this
strange thing called "sleep" that I keep hearing so much about. :P

C-Mike: Aha, so you're the culprit! ;) Thanks for the fix.

Greetings, Stefan, thank you for your help! Now that I'm not in a mad
rush, I'd still like to see what I can do with svn-help. I'm partway
through a C programming class, and this seems like a great way to get my
feet wet. It's likely going to be a few days before I can take a good look
at it, though, because the deadline forced me to turn in my OTI project in
a mostly-complete state, and it seems a shame not to wrap up the loose ends
and finish it after all that hard work to get it this far. Many thanks for
your kind offer of C help in case I get stuck. Hopefully I won't need it,
but it's nice to know where to turn if I'm floundering and Google is not
being my friend. I'll ping you in the next few days after I see what's
involved.

Chat soon,

Lisa

P.S. - Speaking of the aforementioned mad rush, and reading through the
previous emails again, it occurs to me that my cell number is probably
posted in the public archives now. Eek. Any way to edit that out? TIA.

Hi, the mentoring-type person would be me :)

I'm happy to hear you're interested in improving 'svn help'.

I put together the project ideas list in a hurry to get something
up on the website ASAP, since the application deadline is rather close.
So I may have missed some potentially projects suitable for OPW.
If you find that improving 'svn help' is not a suitable project
for you we can try to find something else if you prefer.

Most coding tasks in Subversion require knowledge of the C programming
language. I've tried to come up with project ideas that don't require
intimate knowledge of C in case an OPW applicant doesn't already know C.
Neither the bindings and 'svn help' project ideas strictly require C skills
and I'm happy to help out wherever C skills are necessary.

I hope you'll find an interesting project to work on.
If you have any questions just ask me. Note that as a project we
prefer to keep any communication which doesn't involve sensitive
or private matters on this list, which is publicly archived, so
that everyone involved can stay on top of what's going on.

I'm 'stsp' in #svn-dev on freenode, BTW. I'll try to be reachable
for you there as well, as far as my current schedule permits.

Thanks, Greg. That'll give me something to get familiarized with until a
mentoring-type person is available. :-)

P.P.S. - I see there's a proposed project to improve 'svn help'. This is
also something I might be well-suited to do, with a little guidance about
where to put things. Btw the link to the main source code file of the svn
binary, as described on the Subversion OPW page, is broken:
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/subversion/trunk/subversion/svn/main.c .

Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks!
