Yes, I see a general slowness using the solution in my (temporary) third patch (but note that third patch doesn't need previous patch, I keep here only for reference).
Of course additional improvements has to be done, but I'd like to find a way to keep even the current behaviour, so probably something has to stay in user-code.

If you have a patch and/or suggestions, are welcome ... otherwise we have to update later.
