Logos

Hello. I signed up on google code to make logos for Sling and
microsling.

I'd like to share two proposal sets, and would like to hear any more
ideas that you have on the logos.

my first attempt - This is kind of plain, but it was just my first
attempt. I didn't really understand what was needed but that was
clarified earlier today, so I made the second one.

The second one - the idea just hit me (the sign on the road) and it
had to have the Apache feather, so I figure I'd make it look like it
was flying in front of the sign, but it's an underline, too..

I will make a few more proposals, but this is what I have for now:

First set:
http://www.kb3llm.org/apachelogo/apache.jpg - Sling
http://www.kb3llm.org/apachelogo/msapache.jpg - Microsling.

Second set:
http://www.kb3llm.org/apachelogo/highway_to_sling.jpg - Sling
http://www.kb3llm.org/apachelogo/highway_to_msling.jpg - Microsling.

Like I said - more to come.

Hehe - at least you didn't disqualify me or anything because those
aren't good. I'll be spending more time on future proposals, as I
made those in probably 15 minutes each...

Welcome! For those of us who are not following GHOP, see
http://code.google.com/p/google-highly-open-participation-asf/issues/detail?id=2

(and people, note that additional tasks can be suggested at
http://code.google.com/p/google-highly-open-participation-asf/wiki/Tasks)

As I said in the GHOP tracker, I think those lack a distinctive
"graphic invention", the arrangement of text around the feather
doesn't create a distinctive shape. Compare to the Wicket, Jackrabbit
or Cocoon logos for example.

> ...Second set:

> http://www.kb3llm.org/apachelogo/highway_to_msling.jpg - Microsling...

These won't work as logos, for example they would render poorly if
printed on paper in black and white. Compare to the current Sling logo
(on the left of http://incubator.apache.org/sling/site/index.html)
which has a distinctive shape that, even in black and white, cannot be
missed.

as bad as those proposals were, my drawing is worse! lol.

But I might draw some ideas, while in school for instance, and then
put them into action on the Gimp.

Note that even a scanned drawing would do, as a logo idea, if that helps.

Thanks for your opinion! :)

I am not new to Gimp, but i made each of them probably within about
15 minutes, so -

But like I said I am going to be making more proposals, so stay tuned!!

Again thanks for your opinion.

Gimp is good, but have a look at Inkscape too.

Vector graphics are much easier to scale, and sometimes easier to design.
(the logo can also be converted to vector graphics later on)

Hi Ricki,

I know this still needs some polishing.

My bet would be to have 3 with the feather at the position as in 3a and
remove reflection alltogether. I have to admit, I find this outstanding,
attracting dot interesting. I would keep it.

:)

i couldn't agree more... as i said i am just trying to help the effort
of making the current proposal from a technical level more compelling.

i don't even want to get started about my reservations for the current
proposal in general.
personally, i understand this whole excercise more as a
questionable experiment or a teaching exercise rather than a serious
effort to get a usable logo.

as mentioned before, i think the whole exercise is a bit weird since
"design by committee" always ends up with visually crippled solutions.
specifically since (to my knowledge) the people on this list have no
design experience or education whatsoever, to me this is a bit the
blind leading the blind.

david

And also, though it looks nice having the apache feather at the lower

misreading "sling" for "slina" in this case ...

Re: Logos (proposal 3)

hi guys,

i would rather stay away from adding too much other stuff to the
logo... i would be tempted reduce things a bit.
anyhow, i tried to capture a large clean pixeled apache
logo and tried it on the sling typo for testing purposes here...
i did not have the correct font, so i used arial black.

please do not consider this an alternative proposal this is just
to help the process... this is not even using any design software
just firefox and apple keynote.

http://www.day.com/o.file/sling-logo-components.pdf?get=f814221cbf3817b2f17b4e6d30fd20db

generally. i think that "design by committee" in visual design
always leads to questionable results at best.

maybe you could also be a bit more 'artistic' and include something of

sling stands for a framework that combines jcr, j2ee and osgi. so
maybe a sling around some blocks? just thinking :-)

not really. it still has a white and black 'border'. you need to have
a feather that has proper
alpha-channel information, e.g. a PNG

here is one in svg: http://www.apache.org/foundation/press/kit/
or maybe someone can point out where the 'official' image resources

and I found another feather that the antialiasing should be better on.

I don't know what to do with the dot on the I because that small one
is the one that's in the font.

and yet I admit that the one I added looked worse, so....

hi ricky,
please don't take my criticism to serious or personal. i just read the
GHOP task again - and of course this is a first shot and it must not
be perfect. i'm sure we're finding a consensus.

another thing you might keep in mind that the final logo(s) should be
in SVG, so you might use a vector-drawing tool, like inkscape from the
beginning (i you didn't already)

it's great to have someone taking care of the logos at all! so, thank you.

Well what do you want me to do? You have to give me ideas...

You told me to add the reflection to the feather and so I did..

What is worse about it?

ok -

The dot on the I i did draw myself because the one that was there by
default looked really bad, but I put the one that was native to the
font back.

and I added the reflection to the feather and as per Bertrand's
request, I moved it up, more into the word.

hi,
looks better but still some details that bother:
- the dot of the 'i' somehow corrupts the shadow and the 'trunk' of
the 'i'. it look like you've drawn the dot by yourself and it's not
part of the typo
- the feather is antialiased on white and not on the 'reflection'
background. guess you didn't have a properly cut-out feather with
proper transparency info.
- the reflection does not look natural. it somehow collides with the shadow.

Yes, I like it much better! Maybe you could move the feather up a bit
, so that it "collides" more with the word "Sling". And maybe
softening the gray shadow would be good?

thanks,

Some text effects, and the apache feather as an underline.

I know it's plain, but does it look better than the first two?

Note that for most of these, if you squint and look at them with eyes
barely open, you still recognize the logo. I think that's an important
factor in logo design.

hi,
no offense, but the logos look like someone used photoshop for the first time.
i think the logo should be well designed and probably be more subtle.

examples apache project logos/sites i like:

http://cocoon.apache.org/
http://directory.apache.org/
http://geronimo.apache.org/
http://hivemind.apache.org/
http://jackrabbit.apache.org/
http://mina.apache.org/
http://myfaces.apache.org/
http://shale.apache.org/
http://spamassassin.apache.org/
http://tapestry.apache.org/
http://tomcat.apache.org/
http://turbine.apache.org/

regards, toby

ps: this is my very personal opinion :-)
