Role-based design

Hi!

I got a question about the use of roles.

I want that a user got a different navigation depending on his/her role. How 
is the best way to do it?
The two alternatives I see so far:
- Set different layouts in the login action
- Write a navigation class which shows it's content depending on the role

Any suggestions?
