Have you looked at
http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/usagepatterns.html#outputprops

By default, Xalan indents with newlines only, no 'tabstops'.  If you
want  each level indented a certain amount of characters, you also need
to set a custom property xalan:indent-amount.  If I recall correctly,
this is set through the API by putting the namespace in brackets like {http://xml.apache.org/xslt}
