[users@httpd] RE: imap_open does not ...

I am trying to setup an imap server. I have configured it to work with php 
after compiling it with  
    make slu SSSLTYPE=nopwd. 
 
However, the function imap_open({host:143}INBOX, user-id, pwd) produces the 
error  
     "Could not open the stream host:143 in /home/.../.. Cannot connect". 
 
host stands for hostname. Could anyone advice me on what I should do?
